How to propagate Prunus mume

How to propagate Prunus mume

Propagation of Prunus mume by division

Because Prunus armeniaca has strong suckering ability and many root suckers, division is a common method of propagation for Prunus armeniaca. The specific method is to cut off the sprouts from the root of the mother plant in spring, and then transplant them. Each mother plant can be divided into three to five plants. Generally, the division will bloom two years after survival.

Cutting propagation of Prunus mume

Since the roots of Prunus mume easily produce adventitious buds, the effect of propagation by root cuttings is relatively good. The specific method is to carry out cuttings in early spring, select the lower section of relatively thick suckers of one-year-old plants, cut them into 10 cm to 15 cm long pieces with buds as cuttings, and insert them more than half into the soil. Then water the cuttings regularly and maintain the air humidity. They will take root in about a month and then sprout and grow.

Seed propagation of Prunus mume

Seed propagation is the most common method of propagation. The specific method is to sow in spring and autumn, but autumn sowing is better. For autumn sowing, seeds should be collected in early summer, then washed and placed in a cool place to dry naturally until the autumn sowing period. For spring sowing, seeds should also be collected in early summer, then stored in sand at low temperature and sown in the spring of the following year. When sowing, pay attention to the spacing between seedlings and the planting depth.

Grafting propagation of Prunus mume

Prunus mume has a strong affinity for grafting and is relatively easy to survive, but the grafting propagation method is complicated and requires professional knowledge, so it is not commonly used. The specific method is to use "T"-shaped bud grafting, select robust Prunus armeniaca varieties as scion, and select branches such as apricot and plum as rootstocks. When removing the buds, cut from 1 cm above the bud, cut through the wood to 1 cm below the bud. After removing the buds, wrap them with a wet towel and set them aside for later use. At this time, carve a "T" shape on the rootstock, insert the bud into the rootstock, align the upper end with the cambium, and then tie it with plastic tape. After the plant is grown, untie the bands and cut the anvil.
