A complete guide to the propagation of Iris

A complete guide to the propagation of Iris

Seed propagation of Iris

Iris can be propagated by sowing, but one disadvantage of sowing is that the germination rate of seeds sown directly is relatively low.

When sowing Iris, the temperature for seed germination is between 15℃ and 30℃. If the temperature is not suitable, the germination rate will be very low. It is generally necessary to germinate the seeds before sowing. Soaking them in warm water can increase the germination rate of the seeds. The best time to collect seeds is November. Cut off the inflorescence of the iris, take out the seeds, and sow them in February or March. You can use row sowing when sowing. If the temperature is low, you can cover it with plastic film to keep it warm.

It should be noted that when propagating by sowing, the seeds of Iris affine will not germinate well at room temperature. The vitality of the seeds stored for more than 5 years will decrease. Generally, variable temperature storage method is adopted during storage.

Propagation of Iris sibiricum by division

The division propagation of Iris can generally be carried out throughout the year, but spring and autumn are the best time for propagation. Divide the iris into two parts, and then plant them in clumps of 2 to 3 parts.

Keep 3-5 leaves on each new plant of Iris and cut off the rest. The survival rate of replanted plants is higher, but pay attention to providing shade when the temperature is high.

Rhizome propagation of iris

Iris can also be propagated by tuber propagation, which can generally be carried out throughout the year, but spring and autumn are the best times. Cut the underground rhizomes of Iris into sections about 10 cm long, each with several bell buds. When planting rhizomes, you can place the rhizomes in a dug trench with the root buds facing up, spread out the roots, cover them with soil, and then water them thoroughly. When the temperature is low, you can cover it with plastic film, and provide shade when the temperature is high.
