Peach tree shaping and pruning

Types of peach tree plastic surgery

1. Natural cup shape: In the second or third year after the grafted seedlings survive, shaping should be carried out in conjunction with transplanting.

First of all, you need to select enough main branches with balanced growth, prune them short, and pinch off the branches in the summer to promote branch growth, so that the peach tree can form a perfect and elegant tree structure in a short time. Lay a good foundation for plastic surgery.

Secondly, the trunk should be about 40 cm to 100 cm high; there can be 3 to 5 main branches, and the length and thickness of the main branches should be close to whorled, and then the main branches should be retained to ensure that the length is between 40 and 60 cm; side branches should be selected in the same direction as the main branches, and there should be many large branches on the back.

The final tree structure to be shaped and pruned is: the crown is round and has a round head shape.

2. Cliff plastic surgery

First: select two main branches that grow in opposite directions, and the main branches that grow at a low place should have a large base angle. The specific angle can be determined according to the terrain. Pay attention to cutting at full buds to promote growth.

Secondly: the other main branches should be heavily pruned, and the base angle should be small or they should be cultivated into a larger branch group in order to form a tree shape that leans toward the horizontal plane or low place.

Finally: According to the above steps and operations, the cliff-style plastic surgery will be a great success.

Different shaping methods should be adopted at different growth stages

Early viewing

During this period, the peach tree has sufficient nutrition, grows vigorously, is easy to branch out, and has a small branching angle. Based on the weak stem of the peach tree and its characteristics as a strong sun-loving tree species, it is most appropriate to carry out trunk trimming and main branch selection in winter.

Wait until summer to do some pruning, topping or tying to achieve a perfect tree shape in a short period of time.

Best viewing period

During this period, the crown of the tree is basically formed and begins to age. At this time, the crown gradually expands, the growth becomes vigorous, and the flowering is luxuriant. There is an urgent demand for soil, fertilizer, and water. Attention should be paid to the renewal of branches and the replenishment of nutrients.

During this period, shaping should be carried out, old branches should be cut out, and excess crowns should be cut out and pruned to ensure the growth of the prototype and promote the growth of new branches.
