How to dwarf lilies

How to dwarf lilies

Bulb selection and processing

It is usually planted in September-October. Choose healthy bulbs that are large, plump, and free of pests and diseases. Soak them in a 2% formalin solution for about 15 minutes to disinfect and sterilize them. After they are dried, they can be planted.

Growing medium and container selection

It is suitable to choose sandy loam with good permeability, strong fertility, good water retention and slightly acidic. It can be prepared in a ratio of 2 parts of fertile soil, 2 parts of fine sand, and 1 part of peat soil, and a small amount of phosphorus fertilizer can be added to improve the fertility of the substrate. The substrate can be disinfected by sun exposure, chemical fumigation, or high-temperature frying in a pan.

It is best to choose a clay pot with holes at the bottom and good air permeability. Before planting, it is best to soak the flower pots in 800 times diluted 75% thiophanate-methyl wettable powder for about half an hour to help kill the germs and eliminate the alkalinity of the flower pots.

Planting operation

Before planting, remember to place an upside-down tile at the bottom of the pot, then pad it with larger particles of soil, and then you can spread the prepared substrate, about 4-6 cm thick. Plant the bulbs with the buds facing upwards and cover them with about 5-8cm of soil. If the soil is too shallow, the plants may easily fall over. This is because the soil contains less nutrients, resulting in insufficient nutrition for the plants. After covering the soil, compact it slightly with your hands to reduce the gaps. Finally, place the potted plant in a cool place and water it thoroughly once.

Dwarfing treatment

When the lily buds are 6-10 cm high above the soil, applying 100-150 mg/L of paclobutrazol into the soil can control the height of the plants, so as to achieve the purpose of dwarfing the plants and making them compact, which has a high ornamental value. After that, just follow normal maintenance.
