How to propagate hibiscus by cuttings

How to propagate hibiscus by cuttings

Cutting method

The first is the time for hibiscus cuttings, which should be carried out from May to October.

The second thing is the selection of materials for cuttings: choose branches that have grown for one year and cut them into about 10 cm. Also remove the leaves at the bottom of the branches, leaving the leaves at the top.

Soil environment for cuttings: Choose loose sandy soil or river sand with good drainage. Before cuttings, the cutting environment must be cleaned, and drainage holes must be placed at the bottom before the cutting soil is spread. The thickness of the soil should be about 15 cm to facilitate the insertion of the cuttings. Sterilization is also required. Potassium permanganate solution or 100°C boiling water can be used for sterilization.

Finally, carry out cuttings. When cutting, you can use chopsticks to poke holes in the soil, and then insert the cuttings into the holes at a depth of 2/5 of the cuttings. After insertion, water them, cover them with film or glass, and place them in direct sunlight for maintenance.

Cutting management

After hibiscus cuttings, they should be placed in a warm and sunny place to encourage rooting.

When the weather is hot, you should lift the covering glass or film and spray water on the cuttings to ensure that the plants are moist. However, after spraying the water, you should ventilate the plants. Wait until the plants are dry before covering them with glass or film to prevent leaf and root rot.

After 40 days of growth, the cuttings need to be potted. Put sandy soil containing organic matter in the pot, and then put drainage holes at the bottom of the pot to help the plant drain water. When everything is ready, you can pot the plant. The first thing to do after potting is to water it, and then place the pot in a cool place for cultivation.

Normal management can be resumed about ten days after potting. It needs to be gradually exposed to the sun, supplemented with light, and watered normally.
