How to graft roses

The time for rose grafting

The most commonly used method of rose grafting is cut grafting, which can be performed from November of each year to January of the following year. Of course, if it is performed in December, the survival rate will be greatly improved.

Steps of Rose Grafting

The steps for rose grafting are: first, use a knife to cut off the thorns on the rose branches, and then use a knife to cut off the scion. Be careful to avoid damaging the axillary buds, and leave 2 strong buds on each scion to be cut. Then use a knife to cut both sides of the bud first from the front and then from the back, cutting at an angle with the knife.

Secondly, insert the cut scion into the bark of the rootstock to ensure a firm connection between the two. Use a 1 cm plastic tape to tie the grafted seedlings from top to bottom. The grafted seedlings should be planted in a tall clay pot. Before planting, spread a layer of soil at the bottom of the pot, place the grafted seedlings into the soil, cover the roots of the rootstock with part of the soil, and secure it. Cover the scion with soil again, leaving only the top bud exposed.

Finally, cover the basin with a piece of paper, newspaper will do, then put it in the wooden basin, use wire to make a frame and cover it with a layer of film to keep it warm. During the day, you can bask in the sun outdoors. At noon, you need to remove the film to allow for ventilation, and move it back indoors at night. Don't water within a week.

When new shoots grow out, you can remove the newspaper. When the leaves grow out, remove the film as well and keep it in the open air. In April, you need to transplant and pick the flower buds.
