Cherry Blossom Pests and Their Control

Cherry Blossom Pests and Their Control

Growth habits of cherry blossoms

Cherry blossoms grow in temperate and subtropical zones, prefer warm sunshine and humid climate, and are relatively cold-resistant. It is not very demanding on the soil, and prefers fertile, loose, well-drained sandy soil. It is relatively weak against wind and smoke, so it is not suitable for planting in coastal areas prone to typhoons.

The main pests of cherry blossoms and their control

Scale insects

Scale insects will suck the juice from branches and leaves, causing the cherry blossoms to grow weak. Some species of the insects will secrete a large amount of excrement, which can easily cause sooty mold disease and affect the growth and development of cherry blossoms.

Control methods: The most effective period for controlling this insect is the peak hatching period of nymphs, by spraying a specific solution of imidosulfuric acid or omethoate emulsion.

Pear net bug

The pear bug mainly harms the back of cherry leaves. It will suck the juice of the leaves, causing the leaves to turn rusty yellow. In severe cases, the leaves will turn pale and fall off prematurely.

Prevention and control methods: 1. Apply lime paint on the branches of cherry trees to prevent pear bugs from laying eggs. 2. If you find holes on the branches of cherry blossoms in spring, and gum or insect feces are oozing out of the holes, it is recommended to hit them with a hammer to crush the larvae inside, or directly peel off the bark to kill the larvae. Don't forget to apply fungicide afterwards. 3. You can apply a specific solution of octyl sulfate emulsifiable concentrate to the infested areas.

Red Spider

Red spider mites will suck the juice from the leaves, causing them to fall off prematurely. They will also cause the affected buds to wither and turn yellow, making it impossible to extend the branches and leaves.

Prevention and control methods: 1. Remove the cherry blossoms with red spider mites in time. 2. Before the cherry blossoms sprout, spray the tree trunks with 300-500 times diluted lime sulfur to remove insect eggs and overwintering female insects. 3. During the insect pest period, spray bromocriptine emulsion or omethoate, dicofol and other agents. Acaricides should be used alternately to prevent mites from developing drug resistance.

aphid

Aphids can damage the new leaves, buds and flower buds of cherry blossoms, causing the plants to grow slowly.

Prevention and control methods: 1. Cut off insect-infested branches in time. 2. In late April, bury 15% aldicarb granules at the place where the cherry blossom roots are the most. 3. Spray a specific solution of cypermethrin emulsifiable concentrate or cypermethrin emulsifiable concentrate.

Only by doing a good job of pest control for cherry blossoms can you see healthy and beautiful cherry blossoms bloom!
