How to divide Lilium

How to divide Lilium

Time and method of division of Lilium

It is best to divide Lilium lily in early spring in February or March after the soil thaws. Take the mother plant out of the pot, shake off the excess soil, separate the tangled roots as much as possible, and use a knife to cut it into two or more plants. Each plant should have a considerable root system, and the leaves should be properly trimmed to facilitate the survival of the Lilium lily.

Disinfection of Tiger Lily Potting

Disinfect the divided Lilium lily with 1500 times diluted Benomyl, soak it in it for five minutes, then take it out and dry it before putting it in a pot. Alternatively, you can use Benomyl to irrigate the roots immediately after potting.

Management of Lilium after division

After dividing and potting, irrigate the roots or water thoroughly once. Because its root system is damaged and its ability to absorb water is very weak, it takes about 3 to 4 weeks to recover and sprout new roots. Therefore, watering should be restrained within 3 to 4 weeks after division to prevent root rot. However, the transpiration of the leaves of Lilium lily is not affected, and the leaves need to be sprayed 1 to 3 times a day to keep the moisture in a balanced state. During this period, do not fertilize or expose it to direct sunlight. You can place it in a shade shed for maintenance.

Potting or transplanting Lilium

When potting the seedlings, first put a 2 cm thick layer of expanded clay or coarse-grained substrate at the bottom of the pot as a water filter layer, sprinkle a layer of decomposed organic fertilizer on it as base fertilizer, about 1 to 2 cm thick, then cover it with a layer of substrate, about 1 to 2 cm thick, and then put the plants in, separating the fertilizer from the roots to avoid root burn. After potting, it needs to be watered thoroughly and placed in a slightly shaded environment for a week. When transplanting seedlings, you need to dig a planting hole and sprinkle a layer of organic fertilizer at the bottom as base fertilizer, about 4 to 6 cm thick, then cover it with a layer of soil and put the seedlings in to avoid burning the roots. After placing the seedlings, you need to backfill the soil to cover the roots, compact the soil with your feet, and water it thoroughly.
