Cultivation methods and techniques of Kalanchoe

Kalanchoe is a plant with great ornamental value. It is not complicated to care for Kalanchoe at home. As long as you master the correct methods, you can make it thrive and bloom continuously. Let’s learn about the methods and techniques of growing Kalanchoe.

1. Soil

Kalanchoe prefers loose, fertile and well-drained soil. As succulents , river sand or granular soil should be added to their soil to improve air permeability, and heavy clay soil should be avoided to prevent root rot and leaf yellowing. Special soil for succulents on the market is a convenient choice. Good drainage is essential to avoid waterlogging. Some flower lovers even use pure sandy soil and add a small amount of organic fertilizer water when watering, and have achieved good cultivation results.

2. Lighting

Kalanchoe loves light, but needs proper shade during flowering to protect the petals. If there is insufficient light before flowering, it may result in sparse flower buds and dull flower color. Therefore, pay attention to shade during the high temperatures in summer. Their most suitable growth temperature is 15-25 degrees Celsius, not exceeding 30 degrees Celsius in summer and not lower than 5 degrees Celsius in winter.

3. Watering

Given that Kalanchoe is drought-resistant and prone to root rot, watering should follow the principle of "don't water unless the soil is dry, and water thoroughly when you do." Unlike other plants, the frequency of watering should be reduced in summer and it should be placed in a ventilated and cool place. It is okay even if you don’t water it for 3-5 days. Avoid exposing your plants to rain in the summer to prevent root rot. Watering should also be reduced in winter. Place it on the indoor balcony and expose it to the sun occasionally. There will be no problem if you don't water it for half a month in a low temperature environment.

4. Fertilization

The fertilization of Kalanchoe should be determined according to the soil fertility. If there is sufficient base fertilizer, you can reduce or not apply fertilizer. If the plant is not growing vigorously, you can adopt the method of "applying small amounts of fertilizer frequently". Apply more phosphorus-containing fertilizers before flowering to promote the opening of flowers. At other times, you can use light fertilizers such as fermented rice water. In September, potassium dihydrogen phosphate can be applied to promote the development of new shoots and flower buds.

In short, as a flower plant with good meaning, Kalanchoe is grown at home by many flower lovers, but if you want to grow it well, it is important to do the above things well.
