How to propagate hibiscus

How to reproduce

Hibiscus is a strong sun-loving tree species that does not require shade in summer, so it is very suitable for cultivation in courtyards and balconies.

The main method of propagation for hibiscus is cuttings, which has a relatively high survival rate.

Cutting time

Hibiscus cuttings are usually carried out in early spring in combination with pruning, indoor cuttings are in March and April, and outdoor cuttings can be done after late April.

Cutting preparation

When growing roots for cuttings, you should choose materials with good drainage and ventilation properties. Generally, pure sand or vermiculite can be used. When using pure sand, sift out the powdery sand, rinse it with clean water several times, and then rinse it with boiling water for disinfection.

The survival rate of semi-lignified cuttings is the highest, but lignified ones can also be used.

The cuttings should be cut into about 10 cm long, with the incision at the bottom of the node, and should be flat and smooth.

Only keep the top 2 leaves of the cuttings and remove the rest.

Cutting steps

Insert the rooting material at intervals of 4-5 cm, with a depth of about one-third of the total length of the cuttings. Water thoroughly after planting and keep the temperature at around 20℃. It will take about a month for the seeds to take root.

Hibiscus cutting maintenance

It also likes a humid environment with sufficient water, especially high humidity in the air, rapid growth, and stretched leaves, so during the growing period, you should pay attention to spraying water on the leaves, and spray water once in the morning and evening every day.

If the cuttings are in a pot, you can cover the pot with a plastic bag and spray water once every 1-2 days.

For cuttings taken before April, there is no need for shading, but for cuttings taken after May, in addition to increasing the number of watering to maintain humidity, shade should be provided around noon.
