Weigela propagation method

Weigela propagation method

Seed propagation of Weigela

The fruits are harvested in September and October every year. The seeds can be obtained by drying, crushing and removing debris. Before sowing, the seeds must be germinated. Soak them in cold water for 2-3 hours and wrap them with a wet cloth to germinate.

Choose windless weather for sowing. You can use the method of broadcasting or row sowing on the bed. The soil should not be too thick after sowing. Keep the bed moist within 30 days. Seedlings will emerge in about 20 days.

During the growth period of Weigela seedlings, weeds and insects should be removed frequently. The sowing method for propagating Weigela has a longer growth period and is generally used for mass propagation.

Cutting propagation of Weigela

Cutting method is a common method of propagation of Weigela.

Weigela is usually propagated by cuttings of softwood branches in summer from June to July. Select thick branches and cut them into pieces about 15 cm long, leaving only 2 to 3 leaves on the top. Prepare a sand bed or a peat wood seedling bed. After insertion, set up a curtain to provide shade and pay attention to heat preservation and moisture retention. Generally, the plant will take root more than 20 days after insertion. You can also do hardwood cuttings in March, and the survival rate is also very high. Cuttings seedlings usually bloom in 2 to 3 years.

Layering propagation of Weigela

Layering is also a simple and easy method of propagation.

The branches of Weigela are creeping. Select strong Weigela branches, remove the bark, press them into the soil during the growing season, and wait for them to take root. After rooting, separate the branches and roots from the mother plant in the spring of the second year and replant them.

Weigela plant propagation

Weigela can be propagated by division in early spring and autumn and winter. It is usually carried out in conjunction with transplanting when the plants grow again in spring.

When propagating Weigela by division, dig out the whole plant, take several plants as a clump, divide them into several clumps, and plant them separately.
