The propagation methods and precautions of Osmanthus fragrans

Seeding propagation method of Osmanthus fragrans

It is generally better to sow in autumn, and to do open-field sowing in September.

Before sowing, apply base fertilizer to the seedbed and irrigate the seedbed thoroughly with water. After the water has completely penetrated into the soil, spread the seeds evenly on the seedbed, then cover it with a thin layer of soil and then cover it with grass to reduce the evaporation of water in the soil.

Keep the temperature around 20°C and water when the soil becomes dry, preferably on the grass to prevent the seeds from being washed away.

The seedlings will emerge in about a week and will bloom in the spring of the following year. The earlier the spring planting, the better to prevent the seedlings from sprouting new roots after the temperature rises, which may easily damage the roots if transplanted.

Cutting propagation method of Osmanthus fragrans

Cuttings are usually taken in early summer or autumn and are suitable for double-petal varieties.

The substrate should be loose, well-drained and breathable sandy loam, but do not use acidic soil, which will lead to poor branch growth.

Select healthy young branches without dead or diseased leaves. Generally, they should be about 5 cm long and inserted into the sand bed at a depth of about 2-3 cm.

Keep the temperature at around 25℃ and pay attention to proper shading and moisturizing to make it easier to take root.

Precautions for propagating Osmanthus fragrans

Because Osmanthus fragrans has very few fibrous roots, it is necessary to bring some of the old soil with it when transplanting. Do not plant too densely, as this will affect ventilation.

Shade is needed in the summer, and waterlogging prevention is needed in the rainy season. After the weather turns warmer, the Osmanthus fragrans grows faster, so thin liquid fertilizer should be applied every 15-20 days, and attention should be paid to watering.

In order to increase the number of flowers, it is necessary to pinch the top of the plants and increase the sprouting of side branches. In order to make the Osmanthus fragrans bloom again after flowering, it is necessary to cut off the dead branches in time, apply quick-acting fertilizer, and pay attention to watering.

When the fruit turns yellow, the seeds can be harvested in batches and can be stored for 5 or 6 years.
