How to propagate Forsythia

How to propagate Forsythia

Layering

In spring, press down the drooping paper strips on the plants and bury them in the soil. Cut them off and plant them in the following spring.

Generally, it is mainly propagated by cuttings. The potting soil should be fertile soil with good drainage. After cuttings, the flowerpot should be placed in a sunny place.

After flowering every year, it is necessary to cut off dead branches, weak branches, and overly dense and old branches, and pay attention to root fertilization.

Cutting method

Cuttings can be taken after leaves fall in autumn or before budding in spring, but spring is best. Generally, cuttings are taken in the open field in early spring in the south, and in summer in the north.

Select 1-2 year old strong branches in advance and cut them into 20-30 cm long cuttings. The upper cut should be 0.8 cm away from the first node. It is best for the cuttings to have 2 or 3 nodes, and the lower end should be cut into a flat surface near the node.

Place the base of the cuttings about 1-2 cm away in 500ppm ABT rooting powder or 500-1000ppm indolebutyric acid solution and soak for 10 seconds, then take out and dry.

When cuttings, insert them at an angle, about 18-20 cm deep into the soil, with the top section of the branch exposed above the ground, then bury and compact the soil.

Water frequently during droughts to keep the soil moist, but not too wet, otherwise the part of the cuttings buried in the soil will turn black and rot.

With normal management, the cutting seedling rate can be as high as 90%. If field management is strengthened, the seedling height can reach more than 50 cm after autumn and can be dug and planted in the spring of the following year.

Division method

Division is usually done after the frost or before budding in spring.

Dig out the young branches that grow next to trees that are more than three years old, with the soil still on, and transplant them; or dig out the entire plant and divide it for transplanting.

Generally, one plant can be divided into 3-5 plants, but when cutting the roots, each small plant must have some fibrous roots, which will increase the survival rate.
