How to prune Hoya

How to prune Hoya

Why should the ball orchid be pruned ?

Like all plants, Hoya needs to be pruned regularly after a period of care in order to adapt to the environment and to bloom. Hoya has a strong germination ability and is a plant that is resistant to pruning. Moderate pruning can make the plant shape neat and beautiful, the branches even, enhance the plant's light transmittance, and reduce the occurrence of diseases and pests.

How to prune Hoya

Pinching: break the apical dominance and promote the germination of the lower axillary buds, or inhibit the growth of branches to promote plant branching and form a beautiful plant shape. The method used is pinching.

When the plant shape is intact and the branches are dense and sparse, it is necessary to remove the excess axillary buds to ensure the beauty of the plant and large and colorful flowers.

Pruning: dead branches, inferior branches, unnecessary branches that hinder the plant shape, including young branches. This is beneficial for thinning out branches and leaves, improving ventilation, preventing diseases and pests, and making the plant more compact and three-dimensional.

Branches like the ones in the picture below have obviously withered and can no longer sprout new buds. Leaving them there would only be a waste of nutrients.

Pruning: To prevent the plant from having too many branches and leaves, you can purposefully remove the adventitious buds on the branches in a timely manner to avoid wasting nutrients . When the plant grows too vigorously and the branches and leaves are too dense, you should appropriately thin out some branches or remove the dense leaves to improve ventilation and light conditions, so that the plant grows stronger and is more conducive to flowering.
