How to plant peony

Where do seeds come from?

Before you can plant, you need seeds! As for flower pots and soil, they are necessary, so I won’t go into details. There are two ways to get seeds. One is to buy them directly from a flower seed store. You can buy different varieties and colors, so that the flowers will be more beautiful. Another way is to pick them yourself from your friends' homes. If your friends have peonies at home, you can collect the seeds after the flowers wither around July and August every year, and pick the fruits when they turn yellow. You can sow seeds immediately after picking.

Sowing time

If the seeds are harvested in the same year, they need to be sown in time, usually in late August or late September, and no later than September, otherwise it will be difficult to take root. If the seeds are sown late, the germination rate in the spring of the following year will be greatly reduced. If the seedlings emerge in time, they will find it difficult to resist spring drought and are prone to death because their root systems are not well developed.

Sowing method

Seed processing: The seeds must be processed before sowing. Soak them in water in advance and filter out some weak seeds. Although the seed coat of peony is thin, it is easy to absorb water, so it should be soaked in warm water at 50℃ for 24 hours before sowing. The germination rate of treated seeds will be greatly improved to over 80%.

Sowing: Fill the container with soil and sow the seeds, spacing them 3 cm apart. Do not plant too densely as this may affect the germination rate. After sowing, cover with wet soil to a thickness of about 2 cm. All that remains is the process of waiting slowly, keeping it moisturized and waiting for it to germinate.

It should be noted that the germination period of peony seeds is relatively long. Generally, if they are sown in spring, young roots will sprout in autumn, germinate in the spring of the following year, and slowly grow into seedlings. The development of peony seedlings is relatively slow, and even the fast-growing ones will take 4 to 5 years to bloom. Therefore, sowing peonies is a job that requires a lot of patience!
