Cultivation methods and precautions of Viburnum

How to sow Viburnum

The sowing time for magnolia is generally around the Qingming Festival. Take out the seeds harvested in the previous year, remove the hard outer shell, soak them in warm water for 24 hours, and then sow them after the shell softens. Note that untreated seeds will have difficulty germinating after sowing.

After sowing the seeds, they will generally germinate in about a month. The first leaf grown by the seedlings can be properly shaded. It is best not to expose them to light at noon to prevent water from evaporating too quickly and causing the seedlings to wilt.

If you often find that the leaves are curling but recover in the evening, it means that the weather is dry and there is insufficient water. You should water the plants frequently during the day to increase the air humidity.

How to prune Viburnum

Pruning is the most important step in the process of growing viburnum.

Every year after the remaining flowers fade, new flower buds will differentiate. In March of the following year, flower buds begin to form. Therefore, after the flowers fade, pruning should be carried out to shorten the branches that grow too fast to avoid exposing the lower branches as the magnolia grows.

As the magnolia continues to grow, the branches will gradually age and need to be heavily pruned in time. Keep 50 cm of thick branches and cut off all the remaining crown branches to promote the sprouting of new branches.

Disease and Pest Control of Viburnum

During the cultivation process, the leaves of viburnum often turn yellow. Pay attention to timely supplementation of phosphorus and potassium fertilizers, and spray ferrous sulfate solution once a week.

The leaves of the Viburnum are covered with hairs and are generally not susceptible to insect damage. But bacteria will attach to the leaves, especially in rainy seasons. Therefore, spray Bordeaux liquid once a month and ventilate frequently.

Precautions for cultivating viburnum

The root system of Viburnum is well-developed and has strong adaptability. During the growth period, it should be supplemented with nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium fertilizers according to the principle of applying small amounts of fertilizer frequently.

You can choose to sow seeds or plant the seedlings directly when growing them in pots at home. Generally, planting with soil balls in spring or late autumn can increase the survival rate.
