Shaping and pruning of fuchsia seedlingsThe so-called seedling pruning is to shape the fuchsia before it takes shape. The main goal is to cultivate a beautiful plant shape during maintenance, and different pruning methods should be determined according to the growth characteristics of different varieties. Cross pruningThis method is suitable for varieties with smaller branch opening angles (branches rising upward), such as 'Purple Gold Hammer'. When the seedlings are taller than 20 cm, they should be topped to promote the sprouting of new branches. Because side branches generally grow symmetrically, when pruning, you should keep the two symmetrical branches above and remove all the branches and leaves below. When the side branches grow to about 10 cm, they need to be topped. After the new branches grow out, just let them grow. Remember to cut off the side branches that grow inward or downward at any time. After pruning, keep 8 to 10 flowering branches in a 15 cm to 18 cm diameter pot of the same length. Pyramid pruningThis method is suitable for varieties with large side branch opening angles (branches stretching out flat) and strong growth, such as 'White Calyx', 'Girl's Skirt', etc. Do not top the plant when it is small. When it grows to 20 cm, cut off all branches and leaves below 10 cm. After the side branches grow, in order to avoid overlapping branches, the layered pruning method can be adopted. Leave one symmetrical branch on each layer, remove a pair of symmetrical branches, then leave another layer of symmetrical branches, and repeat this process. Natural pruning methodSuitable for varieties with creeping branches, weak growth, and large-flowered and double-petaled varieties. Prune it into a natural shape according to its form. When the seedlings grow to 30-40 cm, remove the top of the main trunk, remove adjacent overlapping branches, and shorten long branches to promote branching. Cut off the side branches that grow inward at any time to promote a beautiful plant shape. Pruning and shaping of fuchsia during flowering periodIn the natural environment of the north, the peak flowering period of fuchsia is from April to July. Therefore, pruning should be stopped in late March in spring to ensure flowering in mid-April. Because the flowers of fuchsia bloom better at the top, the branches will continue to grow. When the branches grow to a certain length, they should be topped so that the new branches can continue to bloom. When flowering, cut off the branches and leaves in the center of the plant at any time to avoid nutrient consumption and facilitate ventilation and light transmission. Post-flowering pruningWhen the temperature rises to 30℃ in July, the plant will enter a semi-dormant state. The leaves will gradually become weak and need to be heavily pruned to reduce nutrient consumption and help the plant survive the summer safely. Cut off all the longer branches, leaving only the main branches, remove all the old leaves and place them in a cool place. If flower buds sprout at this time, they should be removed in time. New branches will grow in September, and the plant will be more compact at this time. |
