What flowers are suitable for balconies with different orientations?

East facing balcony

The east-facing balcony can receive better sunlight in the morning and during the day. Although the sunlight disappears at noon, it is enough for many short-day and shade-tolerant foliage plants, such as azalea, asparagus fern, monstera, maidenhair fern, morning glory, camellia, variegated caladium, spider plant, Clivia, syngonium, and Christmas cactus.

South facing balcony

The south-facing balcony has plenty of light, with sunlight coming from the east, south and west. Even if it is a concave balcony in an old-style building, although the sunlight and ventilation are slightly worse than those of a protruding balcony, it is still suitable for most flowers as long as it faces south. You can grow some sun-loving plants, such as pomegranate, rose, geranium, Milan, hibiscus, forsythia, jasmine, ivy, trumpet creeper, honeysuckle, etc.

West facing balcony

The west-facing balcony only receives sunlight in the afternoon, and during the hot summer period, the sunlight is very strong, which is not conducive to the growth of potted flowers. However, you can build a shade shed to provide shade, allowing the potted flowers to receive some scattered light through the shade shed, and the flowers can still be grown well. In winter, the west-facing balcony can receive plenty of sunlight, which is very beneficial for flowers. You can grow some climbing plants such as wisteria, osmanthus, honeysuckle, morning glory, and morning glory.

North facing balcony

A north-facing balcony rarely sees sunlight in spring, autumn and winter, and only receives some slanting sunlight in the summer afternoons. Therefore, it is not suitable for growing flowering plants. However, it is still possible to plant some shade-loving foliage plants, such as evergreens. Various ferns, asparagus fern, monstera, variegated taro, bamboo palm, glass jade, hosta, Christmas cactus, and spider plant, etc.
