How to prune jasmine

When to prune

The pruning of jasmine is mainly concentrated in two time periods. One is the growing season, which is from spring to autumn, which includes two prunings. The first is around Qingming Festival, before the jasmine sprouts; the second is after the flowers fade, in August or September. The second is the dormant period, that is, before spring, when dead branches and diseased and insect-infested branches should be cut off to allow the jasmine to rest and recuperate.

Pruning steps

Pruning during the growing season

The first pruning during the growing season should be combined with repotting. First, use a small wooden stick to dig out the entire jasmine plant, remove part of the soil around the root system, and cut off the overly dense fibrous roots.

After repotting, cut off or shorten branches that are too long or too dense so that the branches are evenly distributed.

After the flowers fade, the second pruning is carried out. While ensuring the beautiful shape of the jasmine plant, some leaves are removed to reduce nutrient loss. Keep 3 to 5 nodes on each branch and cut off the top to promote the sprouting of new branches. (After blooming, jasmine will not grow new buds on the original branches. If they are not cut off, they will not produce small ones.)

Pruning during dormancy

Do this before spring buds break, and cut off diseased and insect-infested branches, weak branches, and overgrown branches. Don't be soft-hearted, just cut it and it's done.

Shorten the tops of annual branches, leaving about 10 to 15 cm of branches below.

Remove all leaves. Although it looks a bit bare after pruning, it won't grow if you are not too harsh. Pruning in this way will help the jasmine grow short, strong and beautiful.

Cut at any time

Only those who are diligent and calm can grow flowers well, and this is better reflected in the pruning of jasmine. Hardworking people will observe the growth of jasmine regularly and make timely adjustments; rigid people will only maintain it step by step. Then this cutting at any time seems very casual, but it is very helpful for the growth of jasmine!

Blind branches (branches that do not bloom), overgrown branches, and diseased and insect-infested branches should be cut as soon as they are found to improve the ventilation and light transmission of the plant.

(Jasmine usually blooms three times) Cutting off the flower stalk can promote the next flowering.

Precautions

Newly bought jasmine

If you buy newly-potted jasmine, be sure to cut off all the flower buds and flower buds, otherwise it will be difficult to keep it alive. During the breeding process, the withered branches and leaves should be cut off in time. For newly bought jasmine, no matter how ugly the plant shape is, your first priority is to keep it alive, and don't rush to shape it.

You can only gain if you give up something

When growing jasmine, many flower lovers often focus on water and fertilizer and neglect pruning. They are reluctant to cut off the old branches and leaves even after winter, resulting in thin branches and small leaves. Isn't it a loss? In fact, pruning is very simple. The key is to be ruthless.

In addition, when pruning, you should leave no traces to avoid rough cuts. If the axillary buds are left too long, it will affect the growth of new buds.

Cut branches can be used for cuttings

The pruned jasmine branches can be used for cuttings. Keep two leaves on each branch. The requirement is that the buds in the middle of the leaves grow well. Cut each leaf in half and then you can use it for cuttings. The survival rate of cuttings is relatively high, but since the cuttings are cut, you will be lucky if they grow into new plants!

Ok, it’s summer now. Is your jasmine quietly budding and blooming? Or maybe have a little temper with you, hiding the flower buds. Whether it blooms or not, the jasmine is in your home, so take good care of it!
