Can durian be grown in Henan?

Durian is a famous tropical fruit and is known as the king of fruits. The flesh of the fruit is sticky and juicy, soft and sweet. Many people like to eat this fruit and want to grow this fruit tree at home. So can durian be grown in Henan? Let’s take a look below.

1. Can durian be grown in Henan?

In Henan Province, durian can be grown in greenhouses , but it is generally difficult to bear fruit, or the fruit quality is very poor. Therefore, it is not recommended to grow durian in greenhouses in Henan Province. Durian is a pure tropical plant and has relatively high requirements for environmental temperature. If the temperature drops to around 0℃, the plant will die. Currently, only a few places in the country can grow durian. The greenhouse temperature must be controlled above 15°C for the plants to grow normally. In order for them to bear fruit, they need a continuously high temperature environment.

Durian generally cannot survive when grown outdoors in Henan Province. The temperature in the greenhouse must be maintained at a relatively high level throughout the year, and daily maintenance is relatively complicated. The plants are relatively tall. If the purpose is fruit production, planting durian in a greenhouse is not a good choice.

2. Durian's requirements for a suitable planting environment

1. Temperature. Durian has high requirements for thermal conditions and requires that the place where it grows should be basically frost-free throughout the year, which can meet the growth and development needs of durian.

2. Rainfall. Durian is a tropical fruit. In the planting areas, it can only grow normally if the annual precipitation is above 1,000 mm.

3. Suitable varieties of durian for planting

1. Golden pillow. This variety has a lot of sweet flesh with golden flesh and can be eaten in all seasons of the year.

2. Chani. The ones with small leaves, small size, more flesh, small core, and dark yellow flesh are preferred;

3. Long handle. This durian got its name because its fruit stalk is longer than other varieties. The shape of the stalk is long and round, and the whole durian is also mainly round. The flesh and core are also round. The skin is green, with many and dense thorns, a large core, and the flesh is delicate and strong in flavor.

4. Valley Night Set. The meat of this breed is particularly delicate and sweet like honey, with a small core, which is popular among gourmets;

5. Musang King. The fruit is round. It is small in size and delicious in taste, and is quite popular among consumers.

4. Durian planting techniques

1. It is recommended to sow durian every year, preferably in spring. During the seedling growth period, attention should be paid to fertilization and weeding to promote the growth of seedlings. A good mother plant can be propagated by layering, which takes only 60-70 days to grow from a branch to a seedling.

2. Use organic fertilizer , appropriate amount of lime and soil fertilizer as basic fertilizer when planting seedlings.

3. Fertilization management: It is recommended to apply fertilizer four times a year, namely spring bud fertilizer, summer fruit enlargement fertilizer and pre-harvest fertilizer, especially fruit enlargement fertilizer. After harvest, a deep application of organic fertilizer should be carried out.

4. Shaping and pruning: When the durian tree has a strong germination ability, it is recommended to perform fruit tree shaping after 1-2 years, and prune in time after harvest to maintain a good tree shape.

5. Picking fruits. When the durian fruit turns orange-red or orange-yellow, it is ripe and can be harvested. After harvesting, the fruit cannot be eaten directly. Before eating, you need to wait about 4-7 days for the flesh to become soft.

Durian is the king of fruits and a famous tropical fruit. Currently, the price of durian on the market is quite expensive and its economic value is also high. Therefore, China has also begun to grow durian in large quantities in recent years.
