Succulent planting technology

Necessary for growth

Soil selection

The soil for succulents should be loose and breathable, with good drainage and a certain water retention capacity. The pH value should be between 5-7, which is between slightly acidic and neutral. But this is just a general presentation. Different varieties of succulents naturally have their own most suitable soil. You can learn more about it.

Watering principles

Generally speaking, the following principles should be followed when watering succulents:

① Stop watering during the plant's dormant period. For plants in the growth period, it is necessary to ensure that their water needs are fully met.

② Seedlings should be watered more often, while adult plants should be watered less often.

③ Water more during the flowering period, and reduce the amount of watering after the fruits mature and fall off.

④ Plants with many thin leaves need more watering, while plants with thick but few leaves should do the opposite.

⑤Terrestrial plants need less watering, and vice versa for epiphytic plants.

⑥ When watering, try not to spill water on the leaves of succulents, as the sun will burn the leaves.

Lighting requirements

Succulents generally prefer warm weather and a large temperature difference between day and night. In addition to necessary shading, the light must be sufficient and soft.

Epiphytic succulents should be shaded except in winter, especially in summer, when cooling measures need to be taken when appropriate. The degree of shading should be above 50%. Although plants such as Epiphyllum and Euphorbia have a certain degree of cold resistance, keeping warm in winter is more conducive to flowering next year.

Fertilizer required

Succulent plants should be fertilized during the peak growth season and the bud stage.

Organic fertilizer must be fully decomposed, and chemical fertilizer should be added as needed.

Generally speaking, the ratio of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium is 5:15:10 or 5:10:10, and certain trace elements should be added.

It is better to apply fertilizer lightly rather than heavily. If necessary, you can increase the frequency of fertilization. In particular, avoid concentrations that are too high, and fertilize plants with damaged roots, poor growth, or wounds on stems and leaves.

Planting steps

Sowing steps

Master the sowing time: Generally speaking, the sowing of succulents does not require time, as long as the temperature can be controlled at around 14~24 degrees, you can sow them~ But be careful not to sow in summer!

Preparation of sowing tools: seedling pots, succulent seeds, potassium permanganate solution, expanded clay as base, sowing soil, A4 paper, non-woven cotton as base, and tweezers.

Sowing method: First, place the non-woven fabric at the bottom of the seedling pot. If there is no non-woven fabric, you can choose to use other water-permeable but soil-impermeable materials instead.

Secondly, put expanded clay in the seedling pot, about one-third of the pot. Of course, expanded clay can be replaced by other granular soil. You don't have to prepare it according to expanded clay.

Then, put the prepared sowing soil in. You can choose to buy the sowing soil or prepare it yourself. If you want to prepare it yourself, you can mix peat soil, vermiculite, granular soil, sand, and chicken manure in a ratio of about 10:5:3:2:1 and use it. Remember to level the sowing soil at the end.

The next step is disinfection. Soak the pot in the prepared potassium permanganate solution. After all the planting materials are saturated with water, take them out of the pot and rinse off the dripping water.

After disinfection, the most important step is sowing. Fold the A4 paper that you have prepared before, place the succulent seeds on the A4 paper, arrange the succulent seeds in a straight line, then gently flick the A4 paper to evenly sprinkle the seeds in the seedling pot. This step is very important. You must pay attention to the strength of your fingers, because if you are not careful, the seeds will be piled in the same place. So, you must be careful in this step, very careful!

The last step is actually covering the soil. However, generally speaking, succulents do not need to be covered with soil. Even if you need to cover the soil, it should be very shallow, about 1 to 2 mm is enough. If you are not sure of your accuracy, you can skip this step.

Cover the seedling pot with the lid and place it in a cool place to keep it moist. Remember to open it for ventilation every day and wait until the seedlings emerge.

Note that if you spray water, you must use a very fine sprayer.

Transplanting steps

Tools needed for transplanting: new flower pots, soil, and the succulents that need to be transplanted.

The steps for transplanting are actually very simple. First, we need to prepare the new flower pots for transplanting and put the soil we have prepared in advance.

Then, we turn the succulents upside down and tap them gently. The soil of succulents is usually very loose, and the succulents will come out with a gentle tap. In addition, you can use your fingers to gently fiddle with the soil next to it and remove the succulents.

Dig a small hole in the prepared flowerpot, put the succulent into the hole, and fill the soil from the side net until it reaches the appropriate height.

Finally, sort out the extra pictures, clean them up, and the succulent transplanting is complete. Isn’t it very simple?

The planting of succulents is actually the same as transplanting, except that the step of taking out the succulents is omitted.
