How to deal with Calla Lily after it blooms

How to deal with Calla Lily after it blooms

Pruning after flowering

Novice flower growers will have a little habit like this. When the flowers bloom, they often stop in front of the flowers, expressing their feelings or praising them. In short, they often take care of the flowers and often cut branches and leaves, for fear that the leaves will steal nutrients from the flowers and prevent them from growing well. But as soon as the flowers gradually wither, there is no trace of people. Just water it occasionally and wait for it to bloom next year. In fact, you are totally wrong. Flowers need pruning more after they fall than after they bloom!

There are three main reasons:

Cut off the remaining flowers to ensure balanced growth and avoid loss of nutrients.

Cut off dead and old branches to facilitate the accumulation of nutrients for the plants.

Renew the plants and help form new buds and leaves.

Pruning methods

Pruning shears

It is very simple to cut flowers. After the flowers fade, just cut off the remaining flowers.

Pruning is divided into thinning and shortening. For Calla Lily, the leaves are sparse and can be shortened. Cut the dead branches and old stems short after flowering, and try to ensure that the cut is smooth, otherwise it will affect growth.

Root Pruning

Root pruning is usually done when repotting. Remove old and dead roots to promote the growth of new roots. If the Calla Lily has fewer flowers, you can cut off part of the root system to inhibit root growth and promote flowering and fruiting.

Wipe the buds

One month after the flowers fade, Calla lily will grow new branches and buds. At this time, you should observe the number of buds and remove them in time before the buds are formed. On the one hand, this can prevent the buds from consuming too much nutrients, but on the other hand, too many buds will sprout too many branches, disrupting the plant shape.

Precautions

Pruning time

Pruning should be done 1 to 2 weeks after the flowers have faded. If you prune before or during flowering, it will affect the growth of the flowers and even shorten the flowering period.

Pruning during the growing season

During the growing season of Calla Lily, except for the flowering period, proper pruning will be done for ventilation, to remove diseased and insect-infested leaves or to adjust the nutrition of the plant. The pruning should be light and not deep.
