Introduction to Succulent Plants

Introduction to Succulent Plants

1. Classification of succulents

1. Leaf succulents: Leaf succulents refer to plants that store water in their leaves. The leaves are highly fleshy, while the stems are less fleshy. The stems of some species have a certain degree of lignification. For example, aloe vera, sedum, lithops, and reed.

2. Root succulents: Root succulents store water in their roots. The roots are relatively large, which can avoid sunburn from strong sunlight and gnawing by herbivores. The stems and leaves will fall off in the driest season to maintain moisture in the roots.

3. Stem succulents: Stem succulents mainly rely on their stems to store water. There are a large number of water storage cells in the stems, and there are tissues on the surface that can carry out photosynthesis. They have very few leaves or even no leaves. For example, cactus, cloth ball, etc.

4. Other succulents: All parts of succulents are water storage organs.

2. Growth habits of succulents

Most succulents prefer a warm, well-lit growing environment. They have poor cold and high temperature resistance and can only grow vigorously in a warm environment. Temperature control and warmth preservation measures must be taken in time in both summer and winter. It usually needs to be placed in an environment with good lighting and get more sunlight, otherwise it will easily grow too tall. In addition, succulents contain more water inside, so they are more drought-resistant and do not need to be watered too frequently during maintenance, otherwise it will easily lead to root rot.
