Other old men at this age would play chess, go fishing, or do square dancing, but he has no other hobbies. The only slightly trendy one is growing succulents, and he is particularly obsessed with various kinds of Melilotus. Every day I squat in the greenhouse to water, fertilize, and do all kinds of cuttings... At first I thought he was just playing with it for fun, but I didn’t expect that in less than half a year, he would bear so much fruit. There are more than 100 pots of Echeveria neatly stacked next to the greenhouse, just like a "home of Echeveria", and each one is bigger and stronger than the other! Not only does my dad have a lot of them, but they are also in super beautiful condition! Other succulents are also growing well, look at these densely packed lilies. This is when succulents are at their most beautiful. Why is a 70-year-old man so obsessed with succulents? And it’s so well raised? This story begins in September 2016 when we moved back to our hometown Yuxi from Pu'er, Yunnan. At that time, I had just fallen in love with succulents for more than a year. I would buy succulents, pots and soil every day, and I spent all my salary on shopping... So, my father began to be particularly opposed to us raising succulents. My husband and I suggested building a greenhouse for the succulents, but he disagreed. Later, we had to stack hundreds of pots of succulents neatly on the roof. Although my father also cared about succulents and went up to check on them every day and reported to me which ones had grown taller and which ones had lost their leaves, he never agreed to help us build a greenhouse! As a result, that winter was extremely cold and it snowed, and several succulents died. My father began to feel distressed and finally agreed to build a greenhouse for us. My dad has been a carpenter all his life, so building a simple greenhouse is no problem for him! He dug out his "old friends", wrote and drew on the ground, and a 50-square-meter greenhouse appeared in an instant. Then, he ran to all the building materials markets in the city, bought the most reliable and cost-effective materials, and found people to follow his design and instructions. Although his right hand is a little disabled, he is better than anyone else at work! After 4 days of intensive work and overtime, our glass greenhouse was built. In order to make it easier to go up and down, my father helped me build a staircase, so I no longer have to climb the water pipe stairs. Seeing me happily moving pots of succulents into the greenhouse, my father also had a smile on his face. It turns out that the man who loves you most in the world is your dad! I don't remember which day it was, but my father suddenly asked me to build some ground flower beds for me. I said no, but he said, "If you don't plant, I will. I won't buy. I will just cut your branches and plant them. If they are good, you can keep them. If they are not good, you can sell them." I thought to myself, let him be, as long as he is happy! As a result, this kind of orchid is amazing. He is busy in the greenhouse from morning to night, pruning, grafting, and potting... He asks me to buy him a pot every day. He doesn't like other pots and wants to buy that kind of orchid pot from the flower market. He also asks my husband to buy it for him online. If there weren’t enough pots, I would plant them on the ground in a flower bed, and even dug up my favorite grapes! By continuously planting branches like this, the original few plants gradually became 10 pots, 30 pots, 50 pots... and finally 100 pots. The house is so full that there is no room left. Every time, my father would say that he didn’t want to plant any more flowers, but he still asked me to buy soil and pots every day, and the number of the flowers continued to increase. Because my dad's enthusiasm for growing succulents is unprecedentedly high, he goes to the greenhouse more often than I do, and he even neglects his own garden. One day he actually said to me, "Don't water the plants randomly. I will help you." It just so happened that I had some free time, so for more than half a year, he was the one helping me manage the succulents, and he grew them better than I did! It is said that succulents do not like fertilizer, but my father often fertilizes succulents with very fertile farmyard manure - chicken manure, which he spreads directly on the surface of the pot. As a result, all of them grow fat and big, especially the succulents planted in the ground. Three succulents can fill a washbasin, and they are as strong as corn. And this baron whose hand is bigger than mine, no no no, he should be called the Crazy Baron. Thousands of ice plums have bloomed, it should be beautiful in winter! Sometimes when there was no place to grow them, my father asked me to sell them. I said no, and he said, "Well, other people can't give a good price for such a good plant. We raised it ourselves, and it would be a shame if others bought it and couldn't raise it well." But some time ago, he had nothing to do, so he bought a second-hand tricycle, painted it, and went out to sell succulents. Although no one bought them, he was very happy, especially when others praised him for his good succulent cultivation. No matter what, whether it is growing succulents or selling succulents, as a daughter, I just hope that she will always be healthy and help me take care of the flowers until I am old and gray! My father is 70 years old this year. When I see him busy growing succulents with a satisfied smile on his face, I feel very happy. I only hope that time will go slower and slower, slowing down his aging process and giving him more good times! |
