How does Parthenocissus climb? How to propagate and prune it?

1. How to climb up

When the ivy climbs up, when its footsteps touch the wall, the ends of 6 or 7 thin filaments will become very small discs, and it can hold on to the wall firmly. Its filaments are straight at first, but then they become curled. Then, if you pull its tender stems, it can climb tightly on the wall, so it climbs one step at a time.

However, the feet of ivy are different from those of animals. Animals climb up by alternating steps, but when ivy grows one foot, it will cling to the wall. The higher it wants to climb, the more new legs it has to grow.

2. Propagation and pruning methods

1. Reproduction method: You can reproduce Parthenocissus tricuspidata by sowing. Remove the pulp outside the seeds, wash them, dry them, and store them in wet sand. Sow it in spring, cover it with a film, and seedlings will grow in May. Or you can cut 20-30cm long stems and graft them into the seedbed, where they will also survive quickly. Hardwood cuttings are usually done in March and April in spring, while softwood cuttings are usually done in summer.

2. Pruning method: It is a plant that is very resistant to pruning, so during its growth process, just prune the unnecessary branches according to the specific situation. The main purpose of pruning is to make it more beautiful and tidy, so pruning is relatively casual.
