Planting time and cultivation technology of ice plant

Ice plant, scientifically known as ice leaf sunflower, is an annual or biennial herb belonging to the genus Sunflower of the Aizoaceae family. It is known for its creeping stems and alternate, fleshy leaves, which are flat, ovate or long-spatulate with shiny granules attached to the surface. It loves sunlight, is resistant to drought and salinity, but not to cold and waterlogging. Ice vegetable not only has a crisp taste and unique flavor, but also has high nutritional value. Let’s learn about the planting time and cultivation techniques of ice vegetable.

1. Planting time

Ice plant is suitable for planting in autumn, when the climate is stable, which is conducive to seed germination. Spring is also a good time for planting, and these two key periods should be seized.

2. Preparation before planting

Given that ice plant seeds are small and have weak soil-rooting ability, you need to choose loose, breathable, and moisture-retaining soil. For indoor seedling cultivation, nutrient soil mainly made of coconut bricks can be used.

3. Sowing and raising seedlings

Choose seeds with full grains, soak them in warm water to activate them, and then sow them. After sowing, maintain a suitable temperature to promote germination. Transplant within 20 to 40 days after germination.

4. Transplanting method

Pay attention to protecting the roots of seedlings and avoid transplanting in rainy or hot weather. Control the spacing between plants and rows, water moderately after transplanting, and keep the temperature at about 25 degrees.

5. Water and fertilizer management

Water less within 10 days after planting, and add water later according to the condition of the leaves. Reasonable moisture control helps crystal formation and improves commercial quality. Fertilizer needs to be added in time in the later stage.

6. Field management

The suitable temperature for the growth of ice plant is 20 to 30 degrees. In summer, shade is needed to prevent high temperatures, water is given in moderation during droughts, and drainage is ensured in rainy seasons. Weed promptly to avoid competing with crops for nutrients.

7. Pest and disease control

Ice plant has strong resistance to diseases and pests and generally does not require pesticides . Physical control such as insect nets and sticky boards can effectively prevent insect infestations. Maintain ventilation and dehumidification to reduce the occurrence of diseases.

In short, ice plant is known as a green vegetable because of its fast growth rate and suitability for fresh consumption. When planting in summer, you should consider setting up a shade net to reduce temperature, and when cultivating in facilities, you need to pay attention to ventilation, cooling and dehumidification.
