How to grow Phalaenopsis orchids that have flower swords?

Phalaenopsis, also known as butterfly orchid, belongs to the orchid family. Recently, Phalaenopsis is very popular among the public. Phalaenopsis likes a cool environment, is afraid of drought, is not cold-resistant, is afraid of dryness, and is afraid of lack of ventilation, so indoor cultivation is a good choice. So how to grow Phalaenopsis that has grown flower swords? Let’s take a look below.

1. How to grow Phalaenopsis orchids that have grown flower swords?

1. Temperature is guaranteed

Phalaenopsis is native to the subtropical rainforest area , and has higher temperature requirements. The normal growth temperature is best kept between 15 and 25 degrees. It will stop growing if the temperature is below 10 degrees, and it will be frostbitten or frozen to death if the temperature is below 5 degrees. The Phalaenopsis orchids with flower arrows that we purchased are all grown in greenhouses, and the ambient temperature is not lower than 15 degrees. If the temperature is too low when they return home, the Phalaenopsis orchids will have some adverse conditions, such as yellowing leaves, wilting or drying of flower arrows, etc. Therefore, when caring for Phalaenopsis in winter, keeping warm is the first step.

2. Humidity should be reasonable

Because Phalaenopsis is native to tropical and subtropical rainforest areas, it has relatively high requirements for environmental humidity. The most suitable humidity range should be between 60% and 80%. If the ambient humidity is too low, especially when there is heating at home, the leaves and flower arrows of Phalaenopsis will turn yellow very easily, resulting in no flowers to see in winter. Therefore, when caring for Phalaenopsis, you should pay attention to spraying or using a humidifier to humidify. It is best to use a humidifier in homes with heating, because spraying is just a drop in the bucket to improve the humidity of the environment and has basically no effect.

3. Fertilize thinly and frequently

If your Phalaenopsis is newly bought, it is best not to change the pot or apply fertilizer right away. Take care of it for at least a month until you feel there are no problems and the Phalaenopsis has adapted to the environment at home and can grow normally, then decide whether to apply fertilizer based on the size of the flower arrow. If your Phalaenopsis is not newly bought and the temperature is kept above 15 degrees, you can apply a thin layer of fertilizer every fifteen days to ensure normal growth. Especially when the flower arrow is growing, when the flower arrow is still relatively small, ensure sufficient nutrients. The flower arrow will grow healthier and the flowers will be larger and brighter. The fleshy roots of Phalaenopsis are not tolerant to fertilizer. If you use quick-acting fertilizer such as Huaduoduo, it is best to adjust the concentration to 2000 times. If you make your own organic fertilizer , the concentration should be as low as possible.

4. Adequate lighting

Phalaenopsis is a shade-loving flower . It is best to keep it in a place with scattered light or bright light in other seasons. However, winter is its bud-forming period, so it can be properly exposed to direct light to allow the flower arrows to grow healthily. Therefore, when caring for Phalaenopsis in winter, make sure it is kept away from light. If it is newly bought, first keep it in scattered light for a period of time, and then gradually move it to direct light in the morning and evening. If it is not newly bought, it is best to expose it to the sun in the morning or afternoon. When exposing Phalaenopsis to the sun in winter, it is still necessary to avoid the strong sunlight at noon, especially when there is heating at home and the room temperature is relatively high.

2. Phalaenopsis propagation method

1. Stem node propagation

When the Phalaenopsis orchid matures and grows strong, use sterilized tools to carefully cut off a section of the stem, bury it in a culture dish and plant it. After a period of time, you will see roots and sprouts. Then transplant it and you will have a new pot of Phalaenopsis orchid, and new spores will grow from the original wound.

2. Germination of flower stalks

After the Phalaenopsis orchid blooms, some buds will appear on the pedicels. Remove the afterbirth that wraps these buds, apply some germination agent on the buds with a cotton swab, and after half a month, you can see new leaves growing. After 3 months of care, the roots and leaves will have grown well and can be directly cut and planted.
