Where is the best place to plant figs?

Figs taste sweet and have a large market demand, so more and more people are joining the fig planting industry. If you want to get high yield and good quality of figs, you must put enough effort into planting figs. So where is the best place to plant figs? Let’s take a look below.

1. Where is the best place to plant figs?

Fig is a subtropical fruit , so it is suitable for growing in tropical and temperate regions, such as Xinjiang, Shandong, Zhejiang, Fujian, Guangdong and other regions. The planting soil should be salt-free and alkali-free. The fig tree is not very demanding on the soil. It prefers deep, moist, fertile clay and sandy soil. It does not have high requirements for the environment. It likes to grow in sunny areas with thick soil and good drainage. It can generally be planted by cuttings or division. Figs can be planted in most parts of China.

2. Fig planting technology

1. Seedling cultivation

The most common way to grow figs is through cuttings, as the branches easily take root, so cuttings can be grown more quickly. When taking cuttings, preparations should be made from late winter to early spring. Select strong branches, cut them into small pieces, set them aside and wait for the heavy rain before Qingming Festival to propagate them. First cultivate the land, do deep plowing, apply some fertilizer , pay attention to watering and post-management, then you can transplant the rooted figs in the same year.

2. Transplantation

Figs are usually transplanted and planted from March to April each year. Before that, the planting pit must be dug. The planting pit for fig seedlings is half meter × half meter × half meter. After digging the holes, put an appropriate amount of agricultural fertilizer in each hole and cover it with a thin layer of soil to provide sufficient nutrients to promote the growth of seedlings. If the fertility of the selected planting area is relatively poor, the amount of fertilizer and water can be appropriately increased; if the land quality of the planting area is relatively good, the amount of chemical fertilizer can be appropriately controlled to avoid root burn. When planting, the spacing between each plant should be controlled at 3 to 5 meters. When planting, about 60 trees per acre are sufficient.

3. Pruning

Fig pruning is the most important task, with two main purposes: one is to increase yield, and the other is to shape the fig. The most common tree shape for figs is the natural type, with three branches on each trunk. The purpose of pruning during the first two years is primarily to ensure growth of the trunk and then to maximize the shape of the tree. Regular pruning is mainly to remove diseased branches with insects at any time during daily management to ensure the growth of the entire plant. Prune again in the fall to clean up diseased and infected plants overall.

4. Management

Figs are drought tolerant and do not like water. The main time to water figs is once after planting to help the seedlings stabilize. The next time you water is when the branches spread and produce fruits, the amount of water should be large, but don't water too much when watering. Drainage ditches should be set up in the orchard, and when there is heavy rain, attention must be paid to drainage to avoid waterlogging and resulting in reduced production. Fertilization is mainly carried out at several important time points. Fertilizer is mainly a small amount of agricultural fertilizer after the leaves fall in autumn. Apply a small amount of mineral fertilizer in early spring, and usually sprinkle an appropriate amount of fertilizer suitable for growth according to specific growth conditions.

5. Diseases and pests

Figs still have relatively few diseases and pests, the only one being longhorn beetles . Longhorn beetles are active in July and can be killed manually. If you want to kill it in the larval stage, you need to carefully find the worm hole on the tree trunk, pour the potion into the worm hole, and then seal the hole. Killing the larvae also provides better protection against disease and insect damage to the tree trunk, which takes a lot of time. If the longhorn beetle spreads, pesticides can be sprayed throughout the park.

6. Harvest

Figs ripen around July. Observe the shape of the fruit. When the top of the fruit cracks and the skin changes color. At this point it is almost ripe and ready to harvest. When picking figs, they are usually picked in the sunny mornings or in the evenings after the sun has set, rather than on rainy days, which is not conducive to the storage of mangoes. For better storage, you can perform preliminary processing at home to make dried figs and then sell them.
