What to do after the lily blooms

What to do after the lily blooms

1. Pruning

The flowering period of lilies is concentrated from July to October. By the end of October, the flowering period is basically over and the flowers begin to wither. The first thing to do is to remove the remaining flowers on the plant. Do not leave them on the plant to consume nutrients and possibly cause rot. After removing the withered flowers, prepare a pair of sharp scissors and trim the flower branches appropriately, leaving about 20 cm at the bottom and directly cutting off the part above the soil layer.

2. Control water and fertilizer

The blooming of flowers consumes a lot of energy and requires sufficient water and nutrients. When the flowering period is over, the demand for these two aspects is significantly reduced, especially for water. As long as the soil in the pot is not dry, there is basically no need to water it, and just add a little bit regularly. In terms of fertilizer application, apply a little less than usual, once a month is enough.

3. Storing bulbs

As the weather turns cooler, the above-ground parts will begin to wither and need to be cut off with scissors. After storing the bulbs, you can dig them out and wrap them in moist sand, or you can continue to keep them in the flowerpot, water them from time to time, and store them in a cool and ventilated place. Wait until around March of the following year, dig out the bulbs and plant them in pots.
