Fig is a fruit that is rich in nutrients and has a unique taste and high economic value. As people's awareness of figs continues to increase, more and more people are beginning to try growing fig trees . So how do you grow fig tree seedlings ? Let’s learn more about it below. 1. Selection of seedlings When planting figs , you should choose 1-2 year old high-quality seedlings. The height of the seedlings should be higher than 80cm, the diameter of the branches should be greater than 1cm, and the roots should not be cracked and the epidermis should not be shrunken. 2. Site selection and land preparation It is advisable to choose a high terrain that is sheltered from the wind and faces the sun, has good drainage and irrigation conditions, and has a deep and fertile neutral or slightly alkaline soil for planting figs. Before planting, you need to prepare the land, then backfill the topsoil mixed with organic fertilizer , water it thoroughly, and then ensure that the soil is loose and breathable to facilitate the growth of fig roots. 3. Planting time To prevent drying out in winter and freezing damage in early spring, it is better to plant in spring. The best time to plant is early to mid-March. It can also be planted in autumn, and the seedlings can be dug up and transplanted immediately after the leaves fall, but attention should be paid to cultivating the soil to prevent cold in winter. 4. Planting points Determine the planting density according to the variety, shaping method and soil conditions. The depth of a single planting hole should be 50-70cm and the diameter should be 40-60cm. Apply 20kg of soil and fertilizer to each hole and mix it with the soil. Planting can be carried out after the soil sinks. When planting, be sure to straighten the seedlings, then fill in the soil and finally compact the soil. 5. Water and fertilizer management Figs have a well-developed root system and generally do not require watering, but when the weather is particularly dry, the orchard should be watered in time to replenish moisture. In rainy seasons, drainage work must also be done in a timely manner. In terms of fertilization, figs need to be fertilized once around April to June, mainly with nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium fertilizers. From July to September is the period when the fruit matures, additional phosphorus and potassium fertilizers need to be added, supplemented with some trace elements. 6. Pruning tips When pruning, the branches should be removed and retained in a timely and appropriate manner based on the fruit-bearing characteristics of the fig, and the length of the remaining branches is generally controlled at 55-60cm. When 7-10 years old, the main branch length should be kept within 90cm. In addition, care must be taken when pruning, as most figs bear fruit on 1-2 year old branches, so only 1-2 year old branches can be heavily pruned or cut back after they bear fruit. In general, the cultivation method of fig seedlings is not complicated. As long as you master the above points, you can successfully grow healthy and productive fig trees. I hope this article will be helpful to the majority of fig growers.
