As a popular fruit , cherries always attract many consumers every year when they are on the market. For growers who intend to grow cherries to increase their economic benefits, it is crucial to understand cherry planting and management techniques. Let’s learn about the planting and management of cherry trees . 1. Key points for planting Growth habits: Cherry trees have strong adaptability and should be planted in locations that are sheltered from the wind, facing the sun, have fertile soil, good drainage and irrigation conditions, preferably neutral loam or sandy loam. Planting time: November to early March of the following year is the best time to plant cherry trees, which helps the trees grow and increase the fruiting rate. Planting method: Plant when the soil is not sticky after water penetration. Place the seedling in the center of the planting hole, fill the soil to the rhizome , gently lift the seedling to allow the root system to expand, tamp it down and cover it with soil until it is flat, making sure the grafting site is level with the ground or slightly higher by 5-10 cm. 2. Management Technology Fertilization: Apply autumn basal fertilizer before planting, no later than November. For young trees and trees in the early fruiting stage, 30-60 kg of human and animal manure or 100 kg of fertilizer should be applied; for mature trees, 60-80 kg of human and animal manure or 200 kg of fertilizer should be applied. Top dressing: Apply quick-acting nitrogen fertilizer before flowering or during the fruiting period to promote fruit setting and branch growth. Spraying 0.5% urea and boron fertilizer or potassium dihydrogen phosphate in the early stage of flowering can further increase the fruit setting rate. 3. Pruning method Thinning branches: After harvesting, promptly remove branches that are too high or too dense, keep the interior well ventilated and well-lit, and cultivate small branches inside. Pinch back: Pinch the fruiting branches back to the leaf buds to prevent the fruiting part from moving outward. Pinching: Pinch the inner branches that are retained. When there is space for new shoots, pinch them repeatedly to cultivate small fruiting branch groups. When the outer new shoots grow to a certain length, they are pruned back. Bud removal: timely remove new buds that do not have enough growth space after thinning, pinching and pinching. In short, through the above planting and management measures, cherry trees can grow healthily and bring rich economic returns to growers.
