Breeding methods and precautions of Zephyranthes

Zephyranthes is also known as leek lily and wind and rain flower. It is named because it blooms after every strong wind and heavy rain in spring and summer. This flower is not afraid of wind and rain and is highly ornamental. It is an excellent courtyard and garden plant and is often grown as a potted plant . So what are the cultivation methods and precautions of Zephyranthes? Let’s learn more about it below.

1. Pot soil selection

You can use ceramic or plastic pots that are breathable and have enough drainage holes. The soil should be loose, breathable and rich in organic matter. It can generally be prepared by mixing peat soil, garden soil, perlite, coarse river sand, etc.

2. Light temperature

Zephyranthes loves light, so it is best to give it plenty of sunlight during the growing period. However, strong light should be avoided. In summer, it should be placed in scattered light for maintenance. In other seasons, it is best to expose it to the sun for about 6 hours. In addition, when caring for Zephyranthes, the temperature must also be adjusted accordingly. Zephyranthes likes high temperature environment and the suitable growth temperature is between 15-25℃.

3. Watering tips

Zephyranthes does not have high requirements for water, just water it when the soil is dry and wet. Be careful not to water too much at one time. Stagnant water can easily cause the roots of the Zephyranthes to rot and the leaves to turn yellow, which is not conducive to its growth. In the hot summer, you can increase the amount of watering appropriately, and reduce watering in the winter, just keep the soil moist.

4. Reasonable fertilization

Zephyranthes grows slowly and has small plants, so it does not require frequent fertilization. During the growing season, i.e. spring and summer, a thin liquid fertilizer can be applied every two or three months.

5. Prune at the right time

Zephyranthes is relatively resistant to pruning. If you prune it frequently after it blooms, you can make the plant beautiful and neat, and reduce the number of excessive leaves, which consume too many nutrients. In addition, when pruning, yellow leaves, rotten leaves, and overgrown or overly dense branches can be appropriately pruned to facilitate ventilation.

6. Repot and change soil

If you grow Zephyranthes in potted plants, it is best to turn the soil and change the pot every year. This is because Zephyranthes grows very fast. Changing the pot is to remove the bulbs for reproduction and also to give it enough space to grow. Moreover, when repotting, you can also carry out division propagation. That is, after the Zephyranthes has grown for 2-3 years, separate the bulbs grown by the Zephyranthes and then repot it.

In general, the cultivation method of Zephyranthes is relatively simple. The key is to maintain suitable temperature, light, water and nutrient supply , and to do a good job of pruning and repotting. By following these basic principles, you can also grow a Zephyranthes plant that blooms abundantly.
