Camellia cultivation methods and precautions

Camellia cultivation methods and precautions

Camellia is a flower variety that many people like. It has graceful posture and colorful flowers, and is very popular among flower lovers. Here are some tips on growing camellia and some precautions to take.

1. Suitable soil

Potted camellia prefers slightly acidic, high-humus, loose and breathable mountain red (yellow) loam. You can choose 50% mountain soil, 40% sawdust or edible fungus residue, and 10% cake fertilizer powder and phosphate fertilizer powder. Mix these three substrates together and place them in a container to ferment and decompose for more than a month. You can cultivate fertile soil suitable for the growth of potted camellia.

2. Moderate light

Potted camellia should avoid direct sunlight, especially during the flowering period, but it also needs appropriate light. Potted camellia prefers an environment with good ventilation, moderate air humidity, sufficient scattered light or semi-sun and semi-shade. Therefore, in spring and autumn, we can move the camellia to the balcony to receive full-day sunlight to promote plant growth. In the hot summer, potted camellia should be moved to a shaded place, and a 75% shade net can be used to avoid direct sunlight.

3. Pay attention to the temperature

Potted camellia is afraid of both high and low temperatures. The best temperature is between 18 and 25 degrees. If the temperature is too high or too low, it will affect its growth, especially in the cold winter. It should be moved back to a well-lit and ventilated place in the room. In summer, avoid direct sunlight and place it in a semi-shaded place.

4. Reasonable watering

Avoid watering camellia too often. Water it once a day during the growing seasons of spring and autumn, and once in the morning and evening during the hot summer. In addition to maintaining the moisture needs of the roots, the air humidity must also be maintained. You can maintain a certain air humidity by spraying water on the ground and around the potted camellia flowerpot. You can choose to collect rainwater for watering, but also be careful not to allow water to accumulate in the soil on rainy days, as this can easily lead to root rot.

5. Supplement nutrients

Camellia likes fertilizer. In autumn and winter, because the flower buds develop quickly, they should be watered with special liquid fertilizer or phosphorus and potassium fertilizer once a week. Use less nitrogen fertilizer, as too much nitrogen fertilizer can easily cause the flower buds to burn. After flowering, apply less phosphorus and potassium fertilizer, and avoid applying concentrated fertilizer. Generally, fertilizer can be applied after budding in spring. Apply phosphorus and potassium fertilizers in summer, stop fertilizing for about a month in early autumn, and apply fertilizer again before flowering, and then apply quick-acting phosphorus and potassium fertilizers during flowering to make the flowers larger and more colorful and extend the flowering period.

6. Pay attention to pruning

For potted camellia, you should cut off the dry branches, sick branches, crossed branches, overly dense branches, branches that obviously affect the shape of the tree, and thin out the excess flower buds. Shaping and pruning should be done according to personal preference, but heavy pruning is not recommended because its growth potential is not strong.

7. Pay attention to pests and diseases

The main diseases of potted camellia include ring rot, anthracnose, dieback, leaf spot, sooty mold, etc. The main control agents are carbendazim, thiophanate-methyl, mancozeb, methyl thiophanate and other fungicides . Pay attention to the prevention and control of gray mold and flower blight before flowering. The main insect pests are red spider mites, aphids, scale insects, leaf rollers and bridge-building insects. The main control agents are chlorpyrifos, carbofuran, imidacloprid, and avermectin.
