Sugarcane Planting Methods and Management Techniques

Sugarcane Planting Methods and Management Techniques

Every autumn and winter, there is more sugarcane on the market. Sugarcane has attracted much attention due to its market value and is mainly used for sugar production and direct consumption. Let’s learn about sugarcane planting methods and management techniques.

1. Site selection

Choose flat land with fertile soil for planting. The land plot should have a slope of less than 10°, a width of more than 50 meters, a length of more than 200 meters, no obstacles such as tree roots and stones , and should not be equipped with facilities such as electric poles and concrete piers. The surrounding transportation should be convenient to facilitate mechanized operations.

2. Seed selection

Choose sugarcane varieties that are adaptable to the environment, easy to peel leaves, resistant to lodging, have good perennial roots, and high yield and sugar content, such as Guitang 46, Guitang 42, etc. At the same time, remove the insect-infested sugarcane buds to ensure the quality of the seeds.

3. Seed saving

According to the operating standards, 700~800kg of seeds are retained per hectare, and 4000~5000 square meters can be sown.

4. Sugarcane seed processing

Soak the seeds in clean water or 2% lime water, and then disinfect them with drugs to reduce diseases and pests and increase the germination rate.

5. Deep ploughing and deep loosening

The land should be deeply plowed to a depth of at least 30 cm, and deep plowing should be done every 6 to 9 years to a depth of 40 to 60 cm.

6. Apply basal fertilizer

Apply sufficient base fertilizer, apply 1000~2000kg of farmyard manure, 100kg of calcium magnesium phosphate fertilizer, 100kg of compound fertilizer per 667 square meters, and apply underground pest control.

7. Planting and soil preparation

The wide row planting method with a row spacing of 120 cm is adopted, the trenching depth is 30~50 cm, the planting depth is 25~30 cm, the soil height is about 10 cm, and the shape is turtle back. There are 5000~6000 basic seedlings per 667 square meters.

8. Weed control and film covering technology

The weed control and film covering technology can improve the fertilization effect, reduce weeds and increase the emergence rate. Pay attention to soil moisture and the tightness of the soil to the film.

9. Mechanical harvesting and shipping

Sugarcane is harvested using a sugarcane harvester, and the sugarcane stalks and sugarcane leaf tails are separated by a leaf stripper. The sugarcane stalks are bundled and transported to the sugar factory. The sugarcane leaves are used to make bio- organic fertilizer or burned to generate electricity, and the sugarcane tails and green leaves are transported to the feed workshop.

10. Field management

(1) Mechanized field management

Select appropriate management tools, use wheeled tractors with a capacity of more than 75kW for soil loosening and weeding, regularly maintain the machines, establish adjustment mechanisms, and repair and replace spare parts in a timely manner.

(2) Application of drip irrigation technology

Efficient water saving: Drip irrigation is carried out at the right time according to the soil moisture conditions.

Drip irrigation fertigation: Formulate fertilization plans based on the growth needs of sugarcane, use soluble fertilizers, and ensure water-fertilizer balance.

Drip irrigation: Drip irrigation is carried out three times a year, once every three months, and irrigation is completed in the morning.

In short, fruit farmers should formulate reasonable planting and management plans based on regional characteristics, and use science and technology and scientific management to improve sugarcane yield and quality.
