Can lilac be planted in pots?

Lilac is suitable for potted plants and its growth rate is relatively slow. Older plants are quite ornamental and can be shaped into bonsai. As long as you pay attention to pruning and other nutrient management during the cultivation process, its ornamental value will become very high.

It is best to use a medium-deep ceramic pot or glazed ceramic pot for lilac bonsai. Either a square pot or a round pot is fine. The pot color should be light blue or light yellow, which can contrast with the purple or white flowers. It will bloom in the same year it is planted, and the flowering period is from April to May.

How to grow lilac in pots

1. Soil preparation

The root system of lilac is relatively developed, and it needs a larger space for growth. You can choose a medium-deep ceramic pot. There is no requirement for the shape. Square or round ones are both fine. It is not demanding on the soil inside. It can grow in many soil types, but it is best to choose loose and breathable soil.

2. Pruning

Potted lilac flowers need to have their roots pruned when repotting, cutting off old and weak roots to promote the growth of new roots. Pruning before germination can promote the sprouting of new branches. Pruning old branches and overly dense branches after flowering can reduce nutrient consumption.

3. Watering

Growth is inseparable from the application of water. If you find that the soil in the pot is dry, you need to water it in time, but do not give too much water, and do not allow water to accumulate in the pot. Pay attention to the frequency of watering. During the growth period, you can water it every 2-3 days.

4. Fertilization

Lilac needs to be fertilized reasonably during its growth process. It does not like large amounts of fertilizer, so not too much fertilizer should be applied. Generally, fertilizer should be applied according to its growth.

5. Temperature

Maintain a suitable temperature during the growth process, and try to keep the temperature above 10 degrees Celsius in winter. Do a good job of keeping warm to prevent the plants from freezing and dying.
