Growth habits of tuberose

Growth habits of tuberose

Growth environment

Tuberose prefers a warm, humid environment with plenty of sunshine; it requires fertile, clay soil and is not suitable for growing in sandy soil; it avoids waterlogging and drought.

It has no dormant period in tropical regions and can bloom all year round, while in other regions it sheds its leaves and goes dormant in winter.

Four seasons maintenance

Tuberose is native to South America, where it is an evergreen herb. It grows all year round if the temperature is suitable and blooms in all seasons, but is most abundant in summer. When cultivated in the open field in my country, it can only be cultivated as bulbs planted in spring because of the severe cold winters in most areas. It sprouts and grows in spring, blooms in summer and autumn, and goes dormant in winter (forced dormancy).

Pollination of tuberose

Tuberose is self-pollinating, and since the pistil matures later than the stamen, the natural fruit set rate is very low.

The suitable temperature for growing tuberose is 20℃-30℃. Flower bud differentiation occurs during the growing period in late spring and early summer, requiring a minimum temperature of around 20°C. Whether or not the flower blooms is also related to the nutritional status of the sphere. Generally, those with a ball mass greater than 11 grams will bloom in the same year; otherwise they will not bloom in the same year.

It is not very demanding on soil quality, and clay loam is preferred; it is sensitive to soil moisture and prefers fertile, moist but non-waterlogged soil. During drought, the leaf edges curl up, the flower buds shrink and are difficult to open.
