1. The difference between the two

1. Different appearance: The stems of ordinary Dendrobium are relatively upright and thick, cylindrical in shape, between 10-60 cm in length, and usually unbranched. The leaves are leathery, oblong in shape, blunt at the tip and sheathed at the base. The stems of Dendrobium officinale are shorter, only 35 cm at most. The leaves are papery and lanceolate in shape, usually with a hint of lavender on the edges and midribs, and purple spots on the sheaths.

2. Different habits: Common Dendrobium likes warm and humid semi-shady environment and is not very demanding on soil. Wild ones mostly grow on tree bark or trunks, and some grow in cracks in rocks. Dendrobium officinale prefers a cool climate and usually only appears on rocks at an altitude of 1,600 meters. It also has relatively high requirements for air circulation.

3. Different taste: Ordinary Dendrobium has more juice when chewed, and has a very slight smell and a faint bitterness, but after a long time you can taste sweetness, and it is a little sticky. The smell of Dendrobium officinale is not strong, it tastes very light, but has a little vanilla flavor. It has no distinct bitterness or sweetness, but the longer you chew it, the stronger its flavor becomes and the stickier it becomes.

4. Different effects: Although they belong to the genus Dendrobium of the Orchidaceae family, the effects of ordinary Dendrobium are not as strong. It can only nourish the stomach and produce fluid, nourish yin and clear away heat, and can be used to treat symptoms such as dry mouth, irritability, and insufficient stomach yin. Dendrobium officinale has more benefits. It can nourish blood, dredge cardiovascular and cerebrovascular vessels, lower blood sugar and enhance immunity.
