Which month is best for leaf cuttings of succulents?

Succulents are more suitable for leaf cuttings in autumn and spring. At this time, the temperature is relatively suitable, the temperature difference is relatively small, the minimum temperature is above 10 degrees, and the air humidity is maintained at 70%. As long as the leaves are healthy, the cuttings can grow roots and sprouts in a week, and the survival rate can reach more than 90%.

How to plant succulents through leaf cuttings?

1. Choose healthy leaves

Succulents are healthy in themselves, so choose healthy plants with strong leaves. Be careful when breaking off the leaves, and don't use too much force, otherwise it will be very easy to break. Pinch the leaves and shake them gently a few times, then take them off when they are detached from the stem, making sure the growth point is clean. You can also break off the yellow or damaged leaves to avoid infecting other leaves.

2. Dry the leaves

Place healthy leaves under diffuse light for 2-5 days to allow the wounds to heal. During this period, the leaves may wrinkle, but don't worry; the moisture in the air will cause the leaves to germinate and take root. If you find any leaves turning black and rotten, clean them up immediately.

3. Prepare the soil

In places with relatively high humidity, such as the southern region, the plant can take root and sprout quickly even without the use of soil. However, it is not so friendly to the northern regions. Soil is needed for leaf cuttings. The soil can be seedling soil or vermiculite. Usually, clean water is sprayed on the soil surface to ensure humidity. If you use other soils, spray water several times a day and place it in a well-ventilated location for maintenance.

4. Leaf cutting method

Place the prepared leaves flat on the soil with the front side facing up. It should be noted here that the growth point of the leaves cannot be inserted into the soil, otherwise the leaves will not take root and sprout. There are many active stomata on the back of succulent leaves. You can put the stomata into the soil, and the succulent leaves will grow by feeling the moisture in the soil, thus easily taking root and sprouting new leaves.

5. Maintenance environment

Before the leaves grow buds and roots, leaf-rooted succulents basically do not need to be watered, just maintain a certain humidity. When the leaves are taking root, you can give them a small amount of water, once a week. Do not water them in large quantities, and do not allow water to accumulate to prevent the leaves from getting moldy. After all the leaves have sprouted, you can water them appropriately to keep the soil in the pot slightly moist. If you find that the roots have not fully grown into the soil, use tweezers to dig a small hole in the soil and bury the leaf roots in it. When the leaves of succulents have grown complete leaf disks and the root system has grown well, they can be cared for as seedlings.
