How to grow succulents more vigorously in summer?

June and July every year mark the hottest period of the year. People feel very uncomfortable, not to mention some plants, especially succulents that go dormant in the summer. The challenges they face are particularly severe. If not cared for properly, they can easily become sunburned, which can lead to wilting, root rot, or even damage to the entire succulent colony, undoing all the hard work that went into cultivating it. Therefore, the care of succulents in summer requires more care and caution. How can we grow so many succulents to make them grow more vigorously in summer?

1. The soil should be kept loose and breathable

The healthy growth of succulents is inseparable from a suitable soil environment. Loose, breathable and nutrient-rich soil is the cornerstone for ensuring vigorous plant growth. If the soil is too sticky, it will not only affect the absorption function of the roots, but also may cause root hypoxia in the high temperatures of summer. Therefore, when preparing the culture soil for succulents, you can mix some leaf mold and add appropriate amounts of materials such as vermiculite or perlite . This can not only provide the necessary nutrients, but also improve the air permeability of the soil and promote the healthy growth of the root system.

2. Avoid watering during the high temperature period at noon

With the arrival of summer, the temperature rises and the light becomes stronger, so you should avoid watering succulents at noon. Because the soil temperature is high at this time, suddenly watering with cold water may irritate the root system of the plant and may even cause the plant to wilt. For succulents that need to dormant in summer, the frequency of watering should also be reduced to avoid excessive moisture in the soil to prevent root rot.

When watering succulents in the summer, it is best to do it in the relatively cool morning or evening to reduce potential damage to the plants.

3. Reduce fertilization in hot seasons

Succulents need regular fertilization during the growing season to replenish nutrients. However, during the high temperatures of summer, fertilization should be stopped for succulents that need to dormant, because their demand for water and nutrients will decrease during dormancy, and excessive fertilization may cause fertilizer damage. For succulents that are still in the growing period in summer, the principle of applying thin fertilizers frequently should be adopted, and dilute fertilizer water should be applied in appropriate amounts.

4. Pay attention to shade protection

As light intensity increases in summer, most succulents cannot tolerate direct sunlight, and many succulents die from sunburn in summer. Therefore, the position of the potted plants should be adjusted in time in summer, placed in a place with scattered light, or shade facilities should be built to protect the plants from damage by strong sunlight.

5. Keep the environment ventilated

The hot and humid environment in summer can easily induce diseases and pests of succulents. In order to prevent the occurrence of diseases and pests, the environment should be kept ventilated in summer to ensure air circulation and avoid excessive moisture in the soil. In addition, watering the potting soil with a dilute solution of carbendazim once a month can help prevent bacterial growth.

In short, when caring for succulents at home in summer, as long as you control watering and fertilizing reasonably, avoid direct sunlight, and keep the maintenance environment ventilated, succulents can usually maintain a good growth state and safely spend the summer.
