The legend of Angelica dahurica

There are many legends about Angelica dahurica. One of them is that when Su Shi was the governor of Hangzhou, he got along very well with an old monk in the temple. The two often talked about poetry and studied literature together. One day, the two of them were talking so enthusiastically that they didn't want to go home until late at night. It was already autumn and the night was very cold. After Su Shi got home from the mountain, he caught a cold and felt an unbearable headache, nasal congestion and runny nose, and was in great pain. When the monk heard about it, he asked someone to bring a packet of herbal medicine to Su Shi. After drinking it, Su Shi recovered quickly. So he ran to the mountain to thank the old monk and find out what this magical elixir was. Later I learned that this was the herb Angelica dahurica, which is a specialty of the Hangzhou area, so it is now also called Hangzhou Baizhi. Because of its fragrant smell, it is also called fragrant Baizhi.

There is also a legend that in the early Northern Song Dynasty, the daughter of a wealthy businessman in the south suffered from unbearable pain during her menstruation, which caused her body to become weaker and weaker. So the businessman took his daughter to seek medical treatment everywhere. When they arrived in Bianliang, they met an old man who was collecting herbs. They asked a few questions. After the old man knew about the woman's condition, he took out a bunch of angelica from the medicine basket and gave it to them, and told the businessman to wash it and boil it in water before taking it. After returning home, according to the old man, the woman's pain was much relieved after taking it once. The second time she took it, she no longer felt pain. After a few times, her menstruation became normal. From then on, when women had irregular menstruation and pain, they would take Angelica dahurica, and this method gradually spread among the people.
