When is the best time to prune pear trees?

When is the best time to prune pear trees?

After several months of growth and development, the pear tree will grow many new branches, long branches, or branches damaged by pests and diseases, dry branches, etc. There are also many branches that cross each other, making the trunk of the pear tree too dense, reducing the effect of ventilation and light transmission.

Therefore, through tree shaping, these branches should be properly pruned. Through reasonable pruning and shaping of pear trees, the appearance of pear trees will be more beautiful, the ventilation and light transmission effect will be enhanced, the loss of nutrients will be reduced, and the occurrence of some diseases and insect pests will be avoided. The pear trees will grow healthier and more vigorously, so as to achieve the effect of bearing more fruits.

Pear tree pruning time

Pear tree pruning can be divided into dormant pruning and growing season pruning according to the pruning time. Dormant pruning can be done from the time the pear tree leaves fall to before the leaf buds sprout in the second year, while growing season pruning can be done from the time the pear tree sprouts to before the pear tree leaves fall.

Pear tree pruning method

The main purpose is to shape the tree. The height of the tree trunk is usually cut short at 50cm to 80cm from the ground. The first bud left under the cut should be full and strong to form the central trunk. There should be 5 to 7 full buds in the shaping zone below. 3 to 4 branches should be selected as main branches. The branching angles of the four main branches should be 90° to each other. The extension of the central trunk should be lightly cut. The direction of the cut bud should be opposite to the cut bud of the first layer of main branches.
