The legend of the twin lotus

There is a rather sad love legend about the Twin Lotuses.

It is said that a long time ago, there was a lotus pond in a village, which was full of lotus flowers.

On the east side of the pond, there was a wealthy man who had a daughter in his family, but not a son, so he was very unhappy. Later, in order to comfort themselves, the couple raised their daughter as a son and named the child Sailang. When Sailang grew up, he always dressed like a boy, and many people thought that Sailang was a boy. The man paid for the construction of a library and hired teachers to teach him.

On the west side of the pond, there was also a family. This family had three boys, but they all died young. Later, they had another child, another boy. The couple thought that if they raised their son as a daughter, the child would not die. So the couple dressed the child up as a girl and named her Zhenniang. Later, when Zhenniang grew up, the couple sent her to study in the library of the wealthy family.

Sailang and Zhenniang are very good friends, but they each think the other is their current gender. Later, everyone grew up and parted ways with the library, but they were reluctant to leave each other, so they just became sworn brothers in a confused manner.

After Sailang returned home, he changed back into women's clothes and often missed Zhenniang. Zhenniang also missed Sailang. Later, Zhenniang's father passed away, and Zhenniang changed back into men's clothes to mourn for her father. At this time, everyone knew that Zhenniang was a man.

When Sailang found out, he was very surprised, but Yuanwai was very angry. He thought that Zhenniang's dressing as a woman to study was a disgrace to the family, because Sailang was a woman. The official drove Zhenniang's mother away. When Zhenniang learned that Sailang was a girl, she was very happy and wanted to marry her. But the gentleman's family would not agree, so Zhenniang was unhappy all day long.

Later, Zhenniang and Sailang kept communicating with each other and understood each other's minds. Zhenniang's mother felt sorry for her son and wanted to propose marriage, but the matchmaker was sent back. Zhenniang became depressed and fell ill, and when Sailang learned about this, he also became ill. In order to make Sailang give up, the official drove Zhenniang and her son out of the village.

Later, Zhenniang and Sailang jumped into the lotus pond in the village. The two hugged each other tightly and could not be separated. They had no choice but to bury them next to the lotus pond.

On the next day, the water in the lotus pond rose to the tombs of Zhenniang and Sailang. Beautiful lotus flowers grew on the tombs. Two flowers bloomed, one red and one white, close together. People called them "double lotus" or "double lotus".
