According to legend, once the Eight Immortals went to Yaochi to attend the Queen Mother's Peach Banquet. On their way back, they passed by the East China Sea and alarmed the Dragon King of the East China Sea. The nine sons of the Dragon King were ordered to go to the sea to investigate. The Seventh Prince of the Dragon King saw that He Xiangu, one of the Eight Immortals, was beautiful, so he created a storm on the sea and took the opportunity to snatch He Xiangu to the Dragon Palace. The other seven immortals were furious. They each raised their magic weapon and transformed into seven red-scaled fire dragons, spewing flames at the sea. In an instant, the sea water began to boil.

The Dragon King of the East Sea felt the heat was unbearable in the Dragon Palace. He heard a deafening noise outside and the Dragon Palace was shaking even more violently. After learning the reason, he angrily rebuked the Seventh Prince and tied him up with his own hands. He then asked He Xiangu to sit on the dragon sedan chair, which was carried by the other eight dragon sons, and ascended to the sea to apologize to the immortals. When the seven gods saw He Xiangu return safely and the Dragon King personally brought the Seventh Prince to apologize, their anger subsided and they expressed their willingness to turn hostility into friendship. The Dragon King presented flowers to the Eight Immortals to express his apology.

The Eight Immortals brought flowers to China. The flowers were in clusters like a large hydrangea. The flowers were bright and the leaves were beautiful. They were colorful and extraordinary, adding beautiful scenery to the garden of flowers. People knew that this flower was brought by the Eight Immortals, so they affectionately called it "Eight Immortals Hydrangea".

The Legend of Hydrangea II

According to legend, this flower originated from the picnic at the Eight Immortals Table before the Eight Immortals crossed the sea. He Xiangu saw the picturesque scenery of the place and scattered the seeds of the fairy flower to add icing on the cake. The following year, flowers of eight colors bloomed all over the Baxian Mountain and Jiushan Mountain areas, so people called this flower Baxian Flower.

Later, people discovered that this flower was unique to the Dongling area, so they renamed it Dongling Hydrangea. This flower has been included in the Chinese Flower Encyclopedia as a rare flower.
