How to grow white corn to get high yield?

White corn is mostly a type of glutinous corn and a kind of coarse grain. It has high nutritional value, high fiber content, and has many health benefits. So how do you grow white corn to get a high yield? Let’s learn more about it below.

1. Variety selection

Select high-yield, high-quality, disease-resistant white corn varieties that are adapted to local climate and soil characteristics. For example, consider planting varieties such as Nongkeno 336.

2. Seed treatment

Before sowing, remove seeds that are small, incomplete, broken, or affected by pests and diseases. Select high-quality seeds that are uniform in size, color, and have full grains. After proper drying, the seeds are treated with drugs or coated with seed dressings to enhance their germination potential and resistance to diseases.

3. Key points for sowing

(1) Site selection for sowing: Choose soil with a deep soil layer, good drainage, and medium to high fertility. Avoid continuous cropping and implement a crop rotation system to reduce the incidence of diseases and insect pests.

(2) Sowing time: Generally, sowing begins when the temperature is stable and reaches above 12°C. The spring sowing period is roughly around April to May, and the autumn sowing period can be around mid-to-late September to early October.

(3) Sowing method: Mechanized sowing or manual sowing can be used. Whichever method you use, make sure the sowing depth is consistent (3-6 cm is a good starting point) and the seeds are evenly distributed. When sowing, you can also apply fertilizer at the same time, separating the fertilizer from the seeds to avoid burning the seedlings.

4. Field management

(1) Seedling stage: Pay close attention to the seedling conditions in the field, check and replenish seedlings in a timely manner to ensure that the seedlings are uniform and strong. At the same time, thinning and transplanting should be carried out in a timely manner, and weeding and disease prevention work should be done to maintain a reasonable planting density.

(2) Ear stage: Attention should be paid to the application of ear fertilizer, which usually accounts for about 60% of the entire topdressing stage to ensure the full development of the corn ears.

(3) During the filling and maturity period: special attention should be paid to the prevention and control of diseases and pests to protect the plants from damage. At the same time, reasonable water management is essential, which helps maintain the normal physiological activities of the plant and prevents premature aging caused by lack of water.

5. Pest and disease control

Common diseases and pests include smut, rust, corn borer, cotton bollworm, etc. Among them, for diseases, attention should be paid to strengthening the selection of disease-resistant varieties, implementing crop rotation and deep plowing, and using chemical agents for disease control in a timely manner; for insect pests, full use of biological resources such as natural enemies and microorganisms can be made to carry out biological control work, and comprehensive prevention and control can be carried out by combining physical and chemical methods when necessary.

In general, the yield of white corn can be significantly increased through scientific seed selection, correct sowing, field management, pest and disease control and other measures. However, growers should develop specific planting plans based on local climate conditions and soil characteristics, and flexibly adjust management measures.
