Why don't orchids smell good?

Why don't orchids smell good?

Reason 1: Insufficient light

Orchids prefer a semi-shady environment, which often leads people to believe that orchids do not need sunlight to grow, and they keep them indoors for a long time or even in the shade. This way, the orchids cannot get enough sunlight for photosynthesis. Even if there is occasional scattered light, the nutrients produced are very small, and they cannot produce any fragrance at all.

There is a solution to this problem. Just keep adjusting the light. In winter and spring, you can keep it in full sunlight. In summer and autumn, place it in semi-shade. Try not to move it outdoors. You can periodically move it to a windowsill with moisture and sunset.

Reason 2: Variety degeneration

Changes in the living environment, or transplanting and cultivating with other plants will affect the genes of orchids to a certain extent. When flowering, the orchids may be disturbed by pollen from other plants and may not be able to emit fragrant nectar.

To avoid degeneration of orchid varieties, do not mix them with non-fragrant varieties and other orchids of the same flowering period to prevent natural pollen mixing and degeneration.

Reason 3: The temperature is too low

Orchids that bloom in winter and spring, such as the Cold Orchid, Black Orchid, Spring Orchid, and Four-Season Orchid, will be affected by the lower temperature, which will affect the nectar in their bodies. When the temperature drops below 0℃, the honeydew freezes and the fragrance will not be released. When the temperature rises or after temperature adjustment, the fragrance will naturally be released.

Adjust the indoor temperature,

Reason 4: Lack of fertilizer

Although orchids do not require much fertilizer, if fertilization is neglected, resulting in nutrient deficiency in the orchid, it can easily cause yellow leaves, or even falling flowers and buds, affecting the growth and development of the orchid. As a result, its nectar glands naturally cannot produce fragrant nectar.

Apply more phosphorus and potassium fertilizers. During the growth period and flower bud differentiation period, apply fertilizer in time around the autumnal equinox.
