Paphiopedilum cultivation methods and precautions

Paphiopedilum cultivation methods and precautions

1. Matrix

Most Paphiopedilums are terrestrial or epiphytic orchids. The substrates used for cultivation can be peat soil, leaf mold, bark, coconut coir, moss, etc. You can choose 2-3 substrates to mix, and put stones and expanded clay at the bottom of the pot for drainage and ventilation.

2. Watering

Although Paphiopedilum is a foreign orchid, the plant does not have pseudobulbs and has fewer root systems, so its drought resistance is relatively poor. Generally, if you feel the substrate with your hand and feel it is dry, water it thoroughly, or insert a bamboo stick along the edge of the pot, pull it out and check it when you have nothing to do, and observe if the bamboo stick is dry and then water it thoroughly.

3. Humidity

Like most orchids, Paphiopedilum prefers a high-humidity environment. During the hot summer, you should frequently spray water around the plant to increase the humidity, but you must ensure that the maintenance environment is ventilated. Good ventilation can also prevent the occurrence of plant diseases and pests.

4. Lighting

Paphiopedilum has certain requirements for light intensity. In summer, the light is strong and 70%-80% shade is needed. In spring and autumn, 50% shade is needed. In winter, the light is warm and soft and it can be exposed to the sun all day.

5. Temperature

For domesticated Paphiopedilum, if it is a tropical native species, the maintenance temperature needs to be maintained above 18°C. If it is a species from India or my country, it can overwinter in an environment of 8-12°C. If it is a native species in high mountainous areas, it can tolerate low temperatures of 1-5°C.

6. Fertilization

Paphiopedilum likes fertilizer. During the growth period of the plant, topdressing can be applied once every month. Fertilizer can be urea, compound fertilizer, potassium dihydrogen phosphate, apply thin fertilizer frequently, and do not apply only one type of fertilizer.
