Pests of White Orchid and Their Control

Red spider mites and scale insect pests on white orchid

Red spider mites and scale insects affect the leaves of white orchid, causing them to turn yellow. These two pests will also suck the sap of white orchid, causing the plant to wither and die. Their secretions can also induce sooty mold. In short, they are the two major enemies of the healthy growth of white orchid.

Prevention and treatment methods

For red spider mites, generally spray 1000 times 20% triclosan or 1000 times 50% trisulfide for corresponding prevention and control. Look carefully at the branches of the white orchid. Once you find the spider web, look on the leaves and you will most likely find red spider mites. Red spider mites are very small and usually crawl on the edges or surfaces of leaves. When you find red spider mites, you can use a spray with water and 3 or 4 drops of DDT or Dimethoate to kill them. Alternatively, you can also use a small wooden stick, tie a cotton ball dipped in DDT on one end, and insert it into the basin for fumigation.

For scale insects, you can check the back of the leaves frequently. Once you find scale insects, you can capture them manually. It is recommended to scrape them off with bamboo or wood chips.

Aphids infestation on white orchid

It usually occurs between spring and summer, especially in May and June, and will harm the new shoots of white orchid.

Prevention and treatment methods

If aphids are found, they can be captured and killed manually. For leaves that have already shown symptoms of disease, they can be sterilized by spraying with diluted carbendazim or methylamine solution.
