When is the best time to plant wild rice?

Spring is the traditional planting season for wild rice, especially in the southern regions. The temperature gradually warms up in spring, which is conducive to the germination and growth of water bamboo. The specific planting time is mostly from March to April, which can ensure that the water chestnuts have grown relatively strong before the high temperatures in summer arrive.

Key points for planting wild rice stem

1. Selection of planting site

Wild rice prefers fields with sufficient sunlight, deep soil and abundant water resources. The ideal planting site should be close to a reservoir or have cool water flowing through it to ensure the quality and supply of irrigation water.

2. Determination of planting time

The suitable time for transplanting wild rice stem is from mid-April to early May, and it should be done in the afternoon on a sunny day. Transplanting when the seedling height reaches about 20 cm is beneficial to improving the survival rate and yield. At the same time, the soil temperature needs to reach above 10°C, and make sure to use seedlings with old stems to increase the survival rate. The planting spacing should be maintained at 70 to 80 cm, and the row spacing should be set according to the convenience of field management.

3. Fertilizer management

The growth of wild rice stem requires top dressing in stages. About 10 days after planting, the first topdressing should be mainly organic fertilizer . The second top dressing is carried out after 10 days, and the amount of fertilizer required will increase relatively. In June and July, apply ammonium bicarbonate and other fertilizers in a timely manner according to the growth conditions of water bamboo. In the later stage of growth, in order to promote the expansion of flesh, the last topdressing is carried out. Generally, 30 to 40 kg of accelerator fertilizer is applied per mu, or the corresponding amount of organic fertilizer is used.

4. Field weed control

Regular weeding is essential for the healthy growth of wild rice. In addition to clearing weeds in the field, the yellow leaves of water chestnuts should also be removed in time to optimize ventilation and light conditions. In late June, as the water chestnut grows vigorously, some old or yellow leaves need to be removed to promote the healthy growth of the plant.

Taking the above factors into consideration and choosing the appropriate planting time can effectively improve the survival rate and yield of water bamboo. Before planting, land preparation should be done, including plowing, applying base fertilizer, etc., to create a good soil environment for the growth of water bamboo.
