When is the best season to plant ginger in the north?

Ginger is mostly cultivated as an annual in China. It has both edible and medicinal value, and has strong adaptability, is easy to manage, and has high yield. With one crop per year and one harvest per year, the economic benefits are much higher than traditional crops, and therefore it is favored by the majority of growers. So when is the best season to plant ginger in the north? Let’s learn more about it below.

When is the best season to plant ginger in the north?

Due to differences in climate and environment, ginger is usually planted later in the north than in the south, generally from February to April in the south, while in the north it is planted from April to May each year.

What are the key points in growing ginger?

1. Land preparation and fertilization

Before sowing, harrow the land to make it loose, and then apply farmyard manure, but the amount of fertilizer needs to be controlled. Generally, before planting ginger , it is appropriate to evenly spread 5000kg of farmyard manure on 667m². If compound fertilizer is used, only 60-100kg is needed for the same area of land. However, the actual amount of fertilizer should be determined according to soil conditions.

2. Ginger Selection

Choose healthy ginger pieces that are large, plump, shiny in skin, fresh in flesh, not shrunken, not rotten, not frozen, hard in texture, and free of diseases and insects as seeds.

3. Ginger processing

First, dry the ginger seeds in the sun for 3-5 consecutive days. On the last day of drying, select and collect the ginger seeds in the afternoon while they are still hot, and pile them indoors for 3-4 days. Place hay underneath and cover with straw mats, maintain the temperature at 11℃-16℃ to promote the transformation and decomposition of nutrients in the ginger seeds, and then move them to the germination site for germination. After 20-25 days of germination treatment, the ginger sprouts can be sown when they are 0.5 cm long.

4. Sowing method

When sowing, adopt the row sowing method, control the row spacing at 40×30cm, and the furrow depth at 10-20cm. Generally, 400-500kg of seeds are used per mu. Pay attention to the young shoots facing upwards, press them into the soil, and cover them with a 5cm layer of fine soil. After sowing, harrow the soil. In addition, when sowing, you can also apply an appropriate amount of fertilizer as seed fertilizer to make it germinate quickly. Apply the fertilizer evenly into the ditch and mix it evenly with the soil.

5. Field management

Ginger can tolerate shade but not strong sunlight. Generally, when the seedlings reach 50%, the ginger field should be shaded in time. There are many ways to provide shade, such as building a shed for shade, or intercropping with tall-stalked crops such as corn. In addition, attention should also be paid to scientific fertilizer and water management. There is no need for topdressing during the germination period of ginger . When the height of the seedling reaches about 30 cm and the number of new branches reaches 1 to 2, potassium fertilizer and compound fertilizer can be added. Regarding watering, generally speaking, there is no need to water the ginger before it sprouts. Water it after 70% of the ginger seedlings have emerged from the soil. The field should be kept moist until harvest, and the humidity can be maintained at around 70%.

Generally speaking, ginger is planted around the Qingming Festival every year, and the planting time in the north is slightly later than in the south. Therefore, attention should be paid to timely sowing and strengthening sowing management to achieve successful planting.
