What fertilizer is good for spider plants? How to fertilize?

Many people who have just renovated their new homes like to buy a few pots of green ivy and spider plants to purify the air at home. Although green ivy and spider plants are easy to grow, they will easily wither and turn yellow if no maintenance measures are taken. So what kind of fertilizer is good for spider plants? How to fertilize?

1. Base fertilizer

When planting spider plants, you can use fermented chicken manure as base fertilizer because it contains more organic matter, has comprehensive nutrition and long-lasting fertilizer effect.

2. Topdressing during the growth period

Spring and summer are the rapid growth periods of spider plants, and they require more fertilizer and water at this time. Top dressing should be mainly nitrogen fertilizer, supplemented by phosphorus and potassium fertilizers. Nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium compound fertilizers can be used, and top dressing 2-3 times a month is sufficient.

3. Fertilizer types

Chlorophytum needs nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, as well as trace elements such as calcium, sulfur, magnesium and iron to grow. It is recommended to use compound fertilizer with a nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium ratio of 3:1:2 or 2:1:1, and pay attention to the content of trace elements in the fertilizer.

4. Fertilization method

Fertilization can be done by watering the roots or spraying on the leaves. When fertilizing the roots, add the fertilizer to water according to the amount specified in the instructions, stir evenly and pour into the soil. Foliar spraying is to dilute the fertilizer and spray it on the leaves, which can be done every 7-10 days.

5. Fertilization frequency

For ordinary green leaf spider plants, applying fermented fertilizer water once every half a month can meet their growth needs. For colorful spider plants, more phosphorus and potassium fertilizers should be applied to keep the leaves bright3.

6. Notes

Do not apply too much fertilizer to avoid burning the roots and leaves of the spider plant. Use fertilizer according to the dosage on the instructions and do not increase the dosage at will. After fertilizing, clean up the stagnant water in time to avoid root rot. Do not fertilize in winter or when the spider plant is dormant.

To sum up, fertilizing spider plants should be carried out according to their growth cycle and specific needs, choose the appropriate type of fertilizer, and follow the correct fertilization method and frequency to promote the healthy growth of spider plants.
